The Government has dissolved the current Public Accounts Committee as a prelude to the resumption of Parliament after the General Election. The Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, says a new Public Accounts Committee chaired by the Opposition will be formed once Parliament resumes. When it does, all of the reports compiled by the Auditor General will be considered by the Committee and be tabled in Parliament. The Attorney General says the new Committee will also be able to review the work of the old committee set up under the Audit (Public Accounts Committee) Regulations 2007.
UFDF: The Public Accounts Committee set up in 2007 was required as part of its obligations to be accountable to the people of Fiji with respect to the Auditor General's reports on the accounts and finances of the state. In 2007 it is reported to have had 48 audit reports to review and act upon.
Its functions were to be without prejudice or interference of any individual or organization and was to maintain its independence and carry out its functions with honesty and due diligence to ensure that its credibility was upheld at all times.
It was to have powers to examine the accounts of the Government of Fiji in respect of each financial year to determine if proper accounting and use of public funds have been maintained.
In 8 years none of its findings has been published, nor have any of its reports on the 48 audit reports pending in 2007 been made public? At the very least the Public Accounts Committee should have been asked to Publish their findings to date so that the true picture of government accounts can be scrutinized by the people ahead of the elections? That assumes of course their Dissolution was a known plan and they were able to plan an Interim report on their Findings?
In the meantime, the office of the Auditor General is currently preparing and compiling all of the irrelevant reports for presentation to Parliament.
“With the General Election taking place no later than September this year, it is important that we step up preparations for the transition to the new Parliament now. The new Committee, when it’s formed, will have everything it needs to properly examine all aspects of public expenditure”, he said.
In preparation for the new Parliament, various positions in the Parliament Secretariat will be advertised in the coming week.

UFDF: It is both extraordinary and insulting that the AG would imagine we are all so gullible as to believe the dissolution of the Public Accounts Committee without so much as an Interim report summarizing their findings over 8 years of investigations of government spending is not laced with some devious intent.
With more than 48 audit reports to scrutinize and examine over the past 8 years?
It is not likely that there was no ‘irregularity’ noted in government spending in 8 Years.
We maintain that the termination of the Public Accounts Committee was a deliberate move by the government to avoid the possible disclosure of the real state of Governments finances and to withhold this from the people in the lead up to elections.
