The second robbery suspect, 37-year-old Eroni Baleinukulala, was sent to Natabua remand center on Monday. He is unable to walk, eat on his own, has a broken elbow and multiple fractures in the hand. He needs a care giver and is in remand Block Two instead of hospital:
“All of these outstanding individuals are credible, apolitical and together, will bring integrity to the Commission’s work. They will also make their individual contributions, whether it’s high- level legal expertise in the case of Chen Bunn Young, marketing expertise in the case of James Sowane, financial expertise in the case of Jenny Seeto, existing electoral expertise in the case of Father Arms, communications expertise in the case of Larry Thomas and the broad educational a social expertise of Professor Naidu and Alisi Daurewa. I want to thank them all for accepting their roles on the Commission, which is a vital component of the Bainimarama Government’s plan to hold a free and fair election to the very highest international standards” - Khaiyum, while announcing the Electoral Commission team, 1/9/2014 PDP Disgusted with Barbaric Behaviour of Police The PDP condemns the violent force used on Vilikesa Soko resulting in his death. There is absolutely no reason or excuse to justify such brutal force used by the so called disciplined forces. Our sincere condolences go out to the family of the deceased. The Death Certificate clearly shows the use of brutal force and demonstrates that officers involved in this case need mental assessment and treatment. Only a lunatic would met out such treatment to another human being. The PDP calls for a full independent investigation into this case as soon as possible and the report be made public. This is the 11th unexplained death in Fiji and no one responsible has been taken to task. The Prime Minister constantly talks about all the citizens being equal in Fiji. How is it then that the laws should not apply to some while others with lesser serious crimes face the full brunt of the law? It is evident in this case that military officers were also involved as they were present in the Court case for the second defendant charged with the deceased. The public needs answers to this tragic death. The Commissioner of Police owes the family of the deceased and the public of Fiji an apology for making false and incorrect accusations against the deceased giving excuses that the deceased was ill and did not take medication regularly. The Death Certificate clearly indicates injury and brutal force was the cause of death. It is time the Commissioner gets to work and stops his holiday here in Fiji. The people of Fiji deserve better. The PDP demands an answer from the Government which has been mum over this issue. Will the Prime Minister continue to stand by his men who were responsible for the deaths of the last 10 people who lost their lives in a similar way? Will the Prime Minister also stand by his men in this case? The people deserve answers. This behavior is barbaric and must be condemned by all. The Prime Minister has much to answer for. Testing Rajendra Chaudhry’s Posts August 25, 2014 By CROSBIE WALSH (University of the South Pacific Emeritus Professor Crosbie Walsh publishes the respected blog, Fiji The Way It Was, Is and Can Be. He pioneered development studies in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands and has been both an academic and a journalist.) Michelle Nijhuis (an award-winning journalist for National Geographic and Smithsonian magazines) calls checks on validity Bullshit Prevention Protocol. She says: I am often wrong. I misunderstand; I misremember; I believe things I shouldn’t. I’m overly optimistic about the future quality of Downton Abbey and inexact in my recall of rock-star shenanigans. But I am not often—knock wood—wrong in print, and that’s because, as a journalist, I’ve had advanced training in Bullshit Prevention Protocol. Preventing bullshit is time-consuming, and thoroughly fact-checking an entire article can feel like a particularly demented form of needlepoint. There’s a good reason why my Facebook posts and tweets are almost exclusively about my family and friends, certain TV shows, and articles written by me and people I know and trust. I don’t have a lot of time to practice BPP for free, and I don’t want to share bullshit. nTesting your skills Try testing your BPP skills on Rajendra Chaudhry’s claim that I reported on Saturday. This is what he wrote on Facebook: “From a friend: As we speaking message received Police ordered by PM to arrest Ro Teimumu for supporting Qarase’s perceived comments. Police contacted RFMF and was told not to and also told in clear terms that there is a change of Command at QEB. Period!!!” nCheck. 1 Your own views. Are you already inclined to believe or disbelieve him? 2. Is Facebook a credible source, and if not, why not? 3. Is Rajendra a likely reliable source? What may he hope to gain by publishing this story? 4. What do we know about Rajendra’s friend? 5. Has the story been repeated elsewhere? 6. What of the construction of the story? He quotes a friend (claim 1) who says the police received a message (claim 2) ordered by the PM (claim 3), and goes on to say the police contacted the RFMF (claim 4), who said no, do not arrest Ro Teimumu (claim 5). Ask why on earth Bainimarama should want to arrest Ro Teimumu who he leads decisively in the polls, when her arrest could backfire and generate a sympathy vote? And ask why arrest Ro Teimumu and not Qarase when it was Qarase who made the offending statements? Finally, check to see if the story has been reported elsewhere. Then on the basis of your answers, make your own call. This is all you can do. Ro Teimumu was not arrested. It was a non-event that cannot be tested. My own opinion is that this is the cleverest form of bullshit. It is a story that would have everyone denying any part of it, with no paper trail, and an outcome that cannot be tested because nothing happened. Feedback: newsroom@fijisun.com.fj The Vice-President of Fiji First Party Ratu Wiliame Katonivere left Bainimarama/Khaiyum's party after talking to the Tui Cakau A High Court in Labasa this week ordered Adi Sera Katonivere, in her capacity as administrator of the late Ratu Aisea Katonivere's estate, to pay Macuata Holdings' $70,295 in damages for loss of income stemming from a payment it made in 2006 to settle a loan held by the deceased with the Fiji Development Bank. Macuata Holdings Limited had paid $47,200 to the deceased's FDB loan on June 23 that year. And Justice Chandrasiri Kotigalage topped it up by $23,095 for interest at the rate of six per cent per annum from June 23 up till two days ago when the judgment came to pass. Macuata Holdings had claimed for $129,789.62 in special damages and also requested that general damages be assessed. And in its writ of summons filed on 7 March this year provided the alternative that Adi Sera be ordered to transfer Crown Lease No.2957 being the estate of the late Ratu Aisea - Lot 54 Muanikau Subdivision - to Macuata Holdings. Court papers show that the establishment's claim of $129,789.62 stems from four payments it claimed to have been made from Macuata Holdings account to the late Ratu Aisea. Aside from the FDB loan, it had paid $5580 to Sun Insurance, $27,718 to the Commissioner of Inland Revenue and $49,300 to Asco Motors. Macuata Holdings claimed the said amount as specific damages on the basis that the said payments were made for the benefit of the late Ratu Aisea. However, Justice Kotigalage said based on evidence placed before the court, it only backed up claims of payments made to the FDB to discharge the mortgage of the crown lease No.2957. He said Macuata Holdings failed to establish before the court the other payments made to Sun Insurance, Commissioner General of Inland Revenue and Asco Motors were payments made for the liabilities of the late Ratu Aisea. Justice Kotigalage said there were also no ground for the court to use its discretion to award any general damages. He also issued no order for costs. Source: Fijilive. Meanwhile, deceased's father CRIES FOR JUSTICE: THE family of a robbery suspect who died in hospital after his arrest is demanding answers from the Fiji Police Force, which has found itself at the centre of brutality allegations. Vilikesa Ratu Soko, manager of the Saioni Rugby Club, was among suspects taken in by police last weekend in connection with the $50,000 daylight robbery at the City Forex Nadi branch. Police said the 30-year-old father of three died at 7.30pm on Wednesday at the Lautoka Hospital's intensive care unit. His grieving family is not convinced by police claims he was not beaten. Commissioner of Police Ben Groenewald said the deceased was known to be sickly, had refused to take medication during his stay at the hospital and had internal bleeding. His father, Jeremaia Soko, said his son was not sickly but had visible injuries to his body. "This is the greatest tragedy of my life," a tearful Mr Soko said outside the mortuary yesterday. He said it was after 9pm on Sunday when he received a phone call from the brother of another suspect who was hospitalised. "I came down on Tuesday to see him. I still had hope. He is my fourth son, named after my father and we were close. My wife is a stroke patient and I had to leave her behind to tend to our son. He was only 30 and this is shocking." Relatives of the deceased gathered at the hospital with his wife. Their daughters, aged seven, five and three, remained in Suva. "We don't know what to tell his children, they have been asking for him. They are all girls and were close their father. He was in Lautoka to look for work," he added. A statement from police confirmed the death and said a senior officer had been tasked by the Police Commissioner to investigate the matter. A relative said they relied on the sympathy of medical staff to visit Vilikesa earlier in the week, claiming police barred visitations to the suspects in hospital. Relatives said injuries included major swelling and bruises to the body and eyes. They claimed that despite being on life support and drifting in and out of consciousness, Vilikesa was handcuffed to his bedside table.
