Good Policemen deserve to be well remunerated and appropriately compensated for what they do to protect the public from harm and threats of violence and abuse. They deserve decent pensions and healthcare for themselves as well as their families. Housing should be modestly adequate and well maintained at all times. Families should feel safe while Police Officers work hours beyond the norm in emergency situations. Bad or Rogue Police Officers pose a threat to the entire Nation. Their profligate destruction of Public Trust in situations of instability and civil unrest or riot is tantamount to treason. They must expect severe penalty. In May 2004, Police Commissioner Andrew Hughes held a Parade in Suva at which over 100 Police men and women were given awards to recognise their courage and commitment to Public Duty in the tumult of 2000/2001. Civilians in Fiji have had some exemplary Police Officers serving their interest. But there have also been some egregious examples of rogue Police Officers whose misconduct has let down the reputation of the entire Fiji Police Force. At present, at least one senior such individual faces very serious criminal charges. Those of us who have experience of police operations in other jurisdictions at times of upheaval cannot fail to express our grave dismay and disgust at the conduct of some Fiji Police Officers when trustworthiness and an immediate response was what was sought in extremely stressful and pressing circumstances. Those who remained steadfast shall be honoured with our private esteem but they appeared at times from 2006 onwards to be The Very Few.

My pop was a cop. Several uncles and other close relatives were cops. Many friends from high school and university were cops. It is therefore with regret that I say the Fiji Police Force like the Fiji Military is an institution of state with a damaged reputation. The beginning of the decline of the police force as a respected institution for the protection of the citizenry dates back to the first military coup of 1987, when the Police chief was removed and a handpicked Commissioner of Police was installed by the coupist Rabuka.
