*On 14 May 1987, Rabuka committed treason against Queen Elizabeth 11 of England and Fiji but escaped the death penalty. On 19 May he was resigned to face the gallows, as he boasted:

‘The penalty for treason in all Commonwealth countries is death, and if this is to be my destiny I will accept it.’

But on the same day he managed to extract a questionable pardon, or immunity, from his paramount chief and Governor-General, Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau who, on 23 May, confirmed that he had granted
Rabuka an amnesty.

*GEORGE SPEIGHT had been sentenced to death but the Laisenia Qarase government, in conspiracy with Speight, got the President Ratu Josefa Iloilo to sign a decree commuting the sentence to life.

​The government also got rid of the death penalty, for prominent chiefs were behind Speight's coup.

Earlier, Fiji's bald-head 'Mussolini', broke down and wept as Justice Michael Scott condemned Speight to death by hanging for 2000 Coup.

It was all crocodile tears, for he had pleaded guilty to treason in exchange for a life sentence.
