"The Vanua of Nawaka totally condemn the mischievous report of JYOTI PRATIBHA dragging the Vanua and our Chiefs name into a propaganda report that will only bring division to the full support that we have given to him after his installation. Our chief was only talking on his support for free education and his plans to educate his people. He is looking forward to having an election in September this year and getting a Democratic Government to lead us is what he meant in his short statement published by the Fiji Sun as follows: "Newly-installed Tui Nawaka Ratu Asaeli said he too supported the initiatives of the Government. He said his focus was on educating his villagers and he was adamant to change the mindset of the people. “We have to look forward and move ahead. There is no use being stuck in bad history. People need to adapt to change and move forward,” Ratu Asaeli said." We the people of the Vanua Nawaka wished to convey to Fiji Sun to stop this kind of reporting making use of our Vanua name and Chief to support their propaganda and dirty politics." http://www.fijisun.com.fj/2014/01/15/chiefs-back-pm/

The FBC headline underlined the fighting spirit of the FRU: ‘We will run our show: Fiji Rugby’ “I think the issue of a board director present is one that this board was never consulted. Number two the person that was appointed was not agreed to. So it borders to what IRB dictated and the sovereignty of the FRU. So the FRU board’s stance is this, we should have the right to agree to a member of the board or observer and number two we should have the sovereign right to determine who it is.” http://www.fbc.com.fj/sports/16871/we-will-run-our-show-fiji-rugby-union This is Dr Berlin Kafoa, of the Fiji School of Medicine, and board member and acting CEO of the Fiji Rugby Union, explaining the FRU’s decision not to agree to the demands of the International Rugby Board to appoint an IRB-selected board member because of the issue of ‘sovereignty’ which has led to the suspension of F$3.3m of annual funding. There will be many who might agree with the FRU’s position. But if the FRU board is set on confronting the IRB to protect their sovereignty with respect to an international stakeholder like the IRB, why have they not come clean to the media about the sovereignty given up to the military regime of Frank Bainimarama? 1. Will Rugby House categorically confirm or deny that the Board’s recommendation of Jeremy Duxbury as chief executive was run past Bainimarama before Christmas even though, according to Dr Kafoa, the FRU should maintain ‘the sovereign right to determine’ FRU appointments? 2. Why was the Board’s recommendation of Jeremy Duxbury run past Bainimarama, when Bainimarama’s own nominee to the board had also agreed to the Duxbury recommendation? 3. Would the Board confirm that Bainimarama rejected Jeremy Duxbury as CEO, and why? 4. Did the Prime Minister’s Office contact other potential CEO candidates after Christmas, was this approved and minuted by the FRU and on whose authority within the FRU was this headhunting done? 5. Would the FRU like to retract or amend any of its previous statements that there is no government interference in the running of Fiji rugby? Chen Bunn Young to FBC News: "Well I guess I could tell you now the government approached me, the Attorney General approached me last year, sometimes in August September, so I have had some time to think about it and obviously I don’t have any illusions of the responsibility that came with the appointment if I were to accept it."Meanwhile, Fijileaks wants to know why regime lackey Nalin Patel and his brother Pradeep Patel are not standing trial alongside Mahendra Chaudhry over the "Haryana Millions", for after all, it was G. Lal & Co who provided all the documents to FRCA, including the controversial 'Harbhajan Letter'
Bainimarama’s attack on Chiefs and Church is an anathema to Fijian values, culture, and tradition and must be stopped In welcoming the appointments of the Electoral Commissioners, the UFDF said that although it was a positive first step towards credible elections, it was a pity that the regime did not take this opportunity to act in a bipartisan and inclusive manner in these appointments by asking for recommendations from the political parties. The UFDF said this would have been in line with best constitutional and democratic practice. Consequently, the UFDF says, these appointees, some of whom it holds concerns about their independence, are all handpicked by the interim Prime Minister and Mr Sayed-Khaiyum. This will place an additional burden of responsibility on each of them to ensure that they act with absolute impartiality and reject any attempts at interference in their work. The UFDF said the Yash Ghai Commission is a good example of another non bipartisan appointment that was supposed to be independent but that did not stop the regime from attempting to influence its deliberations and directly interfering with its work. The FRU Board’s selection process – led by USP academic Dr Esther Williams – had confirmed former Teivovo publisher Jeremy Duxbury as their preferred candidate from the four applicants. But when the name was submitted just before Christmas, Bainimarama angrily rejected Duxbury’s selection That led to a Boxing Day phone call from the Prime Minister’s Office to VitiFM broadcaster Malakai Veisamasama in which he was effectively offered the job by the PM’s permanent secretary. Veisamasama played down the story without formally denying any element of it, when talking to the Fiji Sun: "I haven’t been approached … am I part of the latest rumour?”
