UPDATE: UN says captured Fijian soldiers and their commander released.
Read of his thuggery back home:

Russell Hunter on his deportation over Chaudhry's Two Million Dollar Tax Affair: "As we drove into the night in silence, I began to study my abductors. The driver, who in my mind I christened Big Oaf, was very large. He was overweight even for such a massive frame. He narrowly missed running over a dog, which seemed to disappoint him. The other one in front was the so-called Fijian immigration officer who, for me, became the Car Salesman. The other two on either side of me in the rear were Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Both were soon asleep, Tweedle Dum snoring gently against my right shoulder. Car Salesman and Big Oaf evidently knew each other as they joked and laughed uproariously in Fijian. However, even their raucous uproar couldn’t block out the sound of my mobile ringing every few minutes. I asked to be allowed to answer it but was ignored. I suppose that’s when I realised I was alone and cut off from my family and the world. I knew my partner and daughter would be terrified over the total absence of information about what was happening to me but could do nothing to reassure them. My moment of real fear came when the twin cab parked for about a half hour outside a locked gate in Cawa Street in the Namaka industrial suburb of Nadi. Another vehicle arrived and two more extremely large soldiers, much bigger and fitter than Big Oaf, emerged...From my rudimentary knowledge of the Fijian language, I gathered they didn’t have a key for the padlocked gate. Then the twin cab took us all to the airport, where it parked for 15 minutes or so before returning to Cawa Street, where I was told to get out of the vehicle...After a restless night I was put into a similar vehicle with four different but even larger soldiers and taken to the international airport where, again, we waited for a guard to open the security gates. I finally knew I was leaving Fiji. The silent squaddies with a friendly airport security guard took me through the Customs and immigration barrier at arrivals and, after another long wait, I was escorted to flight FJ911, bound for Sydney, by the largest of the soldiers. I was wearing the shorts and shirt I had on when I was abducted."

THE HACKER WITH OTHERS: Fiji Sun's IT Manager Imroz Buksh, among others, hacked into Hunter-Lal e-mail exchanges and passed it onto Attorney-General and FijiFirst Party general secretary and election candidate Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum for Hunter's abduction, detention, and deportation - to shield his then Cabinet colleague and Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry's secret $2million in Australia:

"It's a shame on this interim regime" said Shamima Ali on Hunter's abduction, detention and deportation - and the new SHAMELESS Fiji Sun editorial team and beneficiaries in 2014, the most VOCAL cheerleaders for Bainimarama/Khaiyum's FijiFirst Party to win election:

I had guessed right some of the scoundrels who terrorized innocent people - like media men Russel Hunter who was simply doing is job which is exposing any corruption on the part of any high office holding public official and politician - got promoted and given an opportunity to go make good money in UN peacekeeping and all that by their political puppeteer Khaiyum and Bainimarama. Terrorise at home and do peacekeeping abroad! What a joke!

Nahi pote, AiarseKhaiyum, Bainimarama all thug rulers of fiji who want to continue their thug rule . that's what the Fiji first party is about. It's a way to dress them in respectable democratic garb. but thugs will remain thugs just as pigs will remain pigs no matter how much lipstick you put on them.

From time to time certain things come to light to remind us of the profound insight of the Russian dissident and internationally acclaimed author Alexander Solzhenitsyn who said "... in our country, the lie has become not just a moral category but a pillar of the State".
We know from our own very direct experience how very true that is.

Chileans mark the 41 anniversary of Chilean military coup of 1973 which overthrew the democratically elected government of Marxist President Salvadore Allende and saw the establishment of the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship for 17 years. The Chileans remember the over 3000 people who were "disappeared" by the brutal dictatorship ( see Thomas Hauser's book MIssing for an account of this) and the tens of thousands who were imprisoned or fled into exile.
Remembering is important and the calls by the families of the victims for the perpetrators to be brought to justice remains as important today as when their crimes and human rights abuses were committed.
We too must remember.
