PictureWaqawai chased out of office
Fank Bainimarama sent two of his soldiers (Ben Naliva and Aseri Rokoua) to the Fiji National University on Monday morning (the 31st of March) to chase Pita Waqawai, President of the FTA/FNU, out of his office for revealing to public the marginalization of Indigenous Fijians in the issuing of the Government's Toppers scholarship as revealed in the social medias on the weekend of the Hong Kong Sevens tournament.

In an interview outside FNU Samabula Campus,  Waqawai said that his report was based on facts and there was nothing sinister about it. He commented that FNU deals with the education of every Fiji citizens and the Fijian Teachers Association is concerned with the education of Indigenous Fijian students hence the report is completely valid and is within their jurisdiction.

The two soldier bully boys escorted Waqawai out of the University compound where his termination letter was delivered to him by the Manager Human Resources FNU, Poasa Koroitamana.

Below is Mr Waqawai's release that prompted the action of Bainimarama and his staff from the PM's Office.

Update No. 1/2014: Toppers Scholarship

Ni bula saka.

Please, kindly allow me to share this information with you pertaining to the government’s Toppers Scholarship. This revelation was part of presentations at the Fiji Indigenous Business Council forum held last week, quoted in brief as follows: “Toppers scholarship for the top 600 students in Fiji only 14 went to the "real" Fijians and 586 went to the "fake" Fijians. In % terms: 2.33% to Indigenous Fijians and 97.67% to Indigenous Indians Prior to this it was 300 for Fijians and 300 for Indians.” Food for thought – with elections around the corner! Me da kakua ni rere, guce se madua e na kena tutaki saka tiko na dina, liga qaqa tiko e na qaravi tavi, ka kalougata saka tiko.

Vinaka saka vakalevu.

No wonder Frank sent his boys - just look at this idiot calling Indo-Fijians "Fake Fijians":

“Toppers scholarship for the top 600 students in Fiji only 14 went to the "real" Fijians and 586 went to the "fake" Fijians.

As a native Fijian stats teacher, what I want to know from Mr Pita Waqawai is whether this Indo-Fijians, Kai Lolomas, Fijian-Chinese, Rotumans etc had far above marks than their native Fijian counterparts - if so - its only a fair game!

Unless he and Sodelpa are still saying affirmative action must be applied and scholarships should be given to "no brainers" to balance the book! Come, on, provide the stats, mate!

Sa dua na ka na levu ni viavialevu! The new Military Commander should fire these two idiots for bringing disrepute to the military. The Fiji military is apolitical and should not be used by Bainimarama to advance his selfish agenda! Come on Brigadier Tikoitoga vakasakei rau na tama viavialevu qori!

To Satistician,

While it is indeed good principle re: Fair Game, things may not be as straight forward and black & white as far as putting all races into one scholarship pond. There are so many factors to be considered and issues.

Example - as a former FAB recipient none of the requirements apart from educational merits was mannerism and how you conduct yourself in the basis Fijian language and behavior. Albeit there were some loop holes but at least. At the same time perhaps I do recommend a same thing for the next major ethnic group to also have a same scholarship scheme with the purpose of developing both educational and cultural standing/knowledge. Just a thought...

This toppers scholarship is exactly the winner takes all schemes which should not be practiced in a country where there are indigenous and new arrivals.
This is exactly the recipe for future instability as it was in the past - we never learn eh frank ulukau!!

Kai Viti

It is time you stopped calling Indo-Fijians new arrivals - they have been on the islands since 1879! And many of you have been on the mainland of Viti levu not for even 20 years!

It amazes me that you talk of instability - count your lucky stars that these Indo-Fijians have not turned Fiji into another Sri Lanka!

Compete for those scholarships on equal terms. Full stop!

Its an insult to native Fijian intelligence to portray them as backward and stupid who need sppon-feeding!

The Scholarship is intended at rewarding hard work.... The" real "Fijians will not be given a different renumerative rate when it comes employment so why then should a distinction be made during a scholarship selection.....You do not do anyone a favour by sugercoating the real world...

IFP
Firstly don't use Fijian and Indo together cause "Fijian" has not been consented to for general use by all by the indigenous.
You are a typical winner take all attitude and will never understand social issues etc.
No wonder the indigenous are angry with you, frank and kaiyum......
feel sorry for you bro when shit will hit the fan soon.......
join Labour, NFP etc and be more enlightened ,,,get away from the kaiyum mindset baiya before its too late for you....

Suggest that following is used:
90 of land owned by indigenous so they get 90% scholarships or quota according to population
ie 65% for Kai viti
35% for indos
5% for rest

HAND OUT

You mean a hand out to Kai Viti for non performance?

They still get to study on student loan so the 65% of Kai Viti will have majority Kai Viti in the university because they are greater in population.

Not only the Ethnic Fijians suffer. Also the Ethnic Indians who are less fortunate but of average minds. The Toppers consist of Ethnic Indians that can afford to pay for education. That is unequal distribution of Wealth. Prior Scholarship scheme was good because the less fortunate are given are chance for free education who will then be able to help improve the standard of living of their family. Why do you want to keep giving to the rich when they can afford. A country must look at the poor or underprivileged not the rich. Free education and then pay back while working does not help the disadvantaged. Hats off to Mr Waqawai,. We are all pple of different races and culture and that is what this pushy govt should respect. One cannot mix Water and Kerosene together as Ratu Vesikula mentioned, it will never work. What the Govt. should do is focus on making people respect each other as God's greatest gift, the dignity of a person is paramount, and never make God a personal Matter, our Creator is public matter not personal. Enough of this Client Patron Approach. Ethnic Fijian soldiers must stop listening to Baini and Kaiyum. Lesu mai o Kaiyum, be careful, money is a root of evil. Kaiyum wants to weaken the Ethnic Fijians power in its own country, and he has done it. Next step is take out Ethnic Fijian soldiers and put in Ethnic Indians who will listen at a cheaper cost. Its expensive to maintain an Army populated with Ethnic Fijians. As "Pilate said, give back to Ceasar what is Ceasar'" thus I think everyone else should support that because it was given to them at first instance. Even us Kailoma's we don't belong anywhere strictly speaking, we are a result of "fruit salad mix" which is not an ethnicity. M for one grateful to be living in Fiji and be called a Fiji Islander instead of trying to forcefully called a fijian when I know am not, though I have Fijian Links. M proud to be a fruit salad. Fiji should stand up against this Govt, because what they are doing is terrible, thought MauTseTung had passed on, warai

Well, bro. Pita, thanks for airing these facts. It really must have hit a nerve with FB to have reacted in such a manner.Sending his "yes sir" people to do his dirty works is nothing new, lets all stop the mudslinging and just stick to the factsbefore us,okay.Stooping down to their level and passing comments degrading each other speaks of childish and immature attitude. These are all added munitions which we may use to determine which party to vote for during the coming elections.I had been thinking of supporting FB 's party but such attitude shown by his office goes to show the lack of maturity in the world of politics which he is thinking off taking part in.Just to think that I was going to vote for someone who reacts childishly to situations which call for mature reasoning from someone in the high office, makes me wanna puke. Those that awarded scholarships to students should come out with the facts and stop the rot from setting in...there are criterias for applicants to meet esp GPA and family financial status,if those students that have gained the scholarships do meet the criterias"I say well and good for them, they deserve it but ...but if there is a rot in there ...you'd better wake up Frank and stop hidng inside glass houses bcoz history might be repeating itself educatio n wise.Forward Fiji.

Wonder when will the race cards continue to be an issue in this country. Who will stop the ethnic divide, the government or the people? Was Frank/Khaiyum aware of the policy implications before making any such rationale decisions? Apparently it may be clearer now that the way to rule is to suppress the others and offer the benefit of the doubt to the others.
Cheers
