Naivalurua was at the Australian War College when the 2000 coup happened; he came down to Fiji, went into Parliament, physically manhandled his brother and dragged him out. Later, he supported the coup from outside. He also remains at large for being one of the ten balaclava hooded soldiers who stormed Parliament in 1987 to overthrow Dr Timoci Bavadra and his government - in conspiracy with Sitiveni Rabuka's
"Operation Kidacala (Surprise)".
As for Frank Bainimarama, his own role in the overthrow of the Chaudhry government is shrouded in mystery and allegations of his tacit complicity remain rife, for he had refused to appear and give evidence before the Board of Inquiry into the role of the CRW soldiers in the events of 2000.
We reiterate that the RFMF was not the principal saviour of the Indo-Fijians in 2000; if anything, their duplicitous role and the appointment of Laisenia Qarase and his hardliner nationalists to run an Interim Administration exacerbated the plight, beatings, rape, and violence against Indo-Fijians throughout Fiji.

VICTOR LAL: "Many of my own relatives in Tailevu were beaten up and one of my cousins (despite being a fluent native Fijian speaker was threatened with RAPE if she did not hand over money and jewellery (which she did); later the whole family (including small children and babies) hid in the bushes for several days. There was no sign or appearance of Bainimarama's army to rescue them. The poor cousin of mine later died, cursing Bainimarama and the RFMF until her death. 2000 was not the FIRST TIME. In 1987, many relatives and my own mother hid in the bushes or under the beds from mad dog racist on the loose - SITIVENI RABUKA - now leading SODELPA. Cry, the beloved country'
Fijileaks: What about Indo-Fijian businessmen whom Mahendra Chaudhry and others (including CRW soldiers) accused of financing the 2000 coup; many are today prominent FFP supporters
Also, it is not acceptable for FFP or for that matter, any political party, to claim that it is the only party that can guarantee the safety and security of Indo-Fijians (and Fiji); the implication is that that party is the only one which can rely on the RFMF and the Police to heed its call for intervention. The RFMF and the Police must be above politics but must respond to any government of the day if requested to step in to prevent the breakdown of law and order in the country

"The week before the [2000 coup], that was 24 hours before he [Bainimarama] left for Norway (12 May) I told him that the coup was in a week's time from that day." Lt-Col Viliame Seruvakula to BOI

From Fiji Labour Party website, 24 February 2003:

Punjas Lautoka Factory Burnt Down

A Punja and Sons factory was razed by fire on Wednesday night, a day after claims in the High Court in Suva that the company had financed the May 2000 coup.

The Ocean Soaps Company building, which was 50-years old, on Sautamata Street, in the Namoli industrial area, was completely destroyed, causing millions of dollars in damage.

Police force are investigating the cause of the fire, although they have not ruled out foul play. Police could not establish whether the property and its contents were insured.

The premises were well secured with security officers manning the gates on a 24-hour basis. The building was well fenced and workers were doing shift work inside when fire broke out at about 11:30 pm.

Workers on the night shift and the security officer on duty were taken in for questioning.

The Managing Director of Punja and Sons Nitin Punja said they did not have access to the site and as such were not able to access the full extent of damage and did no say anything on the future of workers in the soap factory.

The Company claimed they had been receiving threats after Salesi Tuitagalele, a witness in the treason trial of Josefa Nata and Timoci Silatolu, made allegations linking the company along with C J Patel as financiers of the May 19, 2000 coup.

Public reacted strongly to the allegations and staff of Punja and Sons were continuously sworn at and verbally abused on the street, a day after the allegations were made in Suva’s High Court.

The employees who could not handle the insults went home and changed out of their uniforms. Punja and Sons had advised all their staffs not to wear the company uniforms or carry Punjas logo for their personal safety.

And according to a military idiot called Ratu Jone Kalouniwai Everyman and his dog in Fiji should be showing respect for the Fiji military's professionalism. What professionalism is that? The "professionalism " that propels military men to carry out coups; rape democracy and grab power for themselves; intimidate the civilian population they are meant to protect and commit human rights abuses and impose a military dictatorship in the country?

Yeah, what professionalism is RFMF chief of staff Ratu Jone Kalouniwai talking about? Where was the Fiji military's professionalism when with a rogue military general they trashed the country's 1970 independence constitution and did the same to the 1997 Constitution under coupist commander Bainimarama?
Where was the Fiji military's respect for constitutional governance and their prescribed role within it?
The Fiji military has forfeited it's right to being a respected institution of the Fijian State by its own rogue conduct - both past and present.
There is a need for the Fiji military to do some critical, honest self- examination of its role in a modern democratic nation state.

Editor,
Changing Political Outlook
Amnesty International has accused Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi of " burying her head in the sand " with regard to the Rohingya Muslim persecution and exodus ( DW News 19/09 ).
The accusation comes as no surprise . What people see and how they see things often depends on where they sit. Now Suu Kyi sits as member of the Myanmar ruling establishment under military control.
She is no longer the persecuted pro- democracy icon the world admired and rewarded with the Nobel Peace Prize.
Her political outlook has changed.
Her changed outlook reminds me of my friend Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum. He was once admired and respected as a pro- democracy warrior. He then became the " right hand man " of a military dictator.
He now sings a somewhat different tune.
As with Suu Kyi we understand where Aiyaz is coming from these days.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

Khaiyum still is a pro-democracy warrior. He abrogated the unabrogatable constitution...! SODELPA loved it and does not have manifesto to repeal that decree. why?

Perhaps because the politicians did not respect and follow it when it was active. So Khaiyum did what SDL, and RFMF could not do so he remains a hero... because NZ, Aussie, USA and UK love him, so he must be right...RIGHT..???!!!

Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum : From a pro-democracy warrior to a Megalomanic autocrat. Now that's what you call a " paradigm change".
Khaiyum is a study on what political greed can do to a good person.

Watching CNN these days is almost like to watching a horror movie. This morning i heard how a women was raped and her child was burnt alive by Myanmar thugs. All Fijians should be grateful that we live in a usually peaceful and resource rich country. Everyday i pray and give thanks to my Girmit ancestor who decided to get on that boat to come to Fiji and for the hospitality of the natives in this country for allowing me the chance to call this place home. Fiji in my opinion can be the greatest country in the world to live in. The only ingredient required is the ability to think when we cast our vote in the next election. We have failed at making the right choice in the last 30 years. We must make sure that a Multiracial and liberal party like the NFP is given a chance. It is our only hope for a great future. division and thuggery must be said no to with a resounding no by all Fijians once and for all. I am a close associate of the NFP party and can assure all Fijians that great things are in store for all of us if the NFP wins. Give us a chance. Vote NFP to say to thuggery, to say no to corruption, to say no to 20 families ruling Fiji economically, to say no to coups once an for all and to say yes to a prosperous future for all Fijians who call this dot in the ocean home.

[Q26] To Seravakula Bainimarama said "you guys better be prepared".

Seravakula's boys immediately informed PM Chaudhry via his MP on Monday to pass message to PM to order all of gov't MP's to stay home on Friday.

So RFMF tried to protect the Indo Fijians but Chaudhry wanted to be the hero to not heed the secret instructions passed to his government.

Even if Bai was silently supporting the coup, Countries real army notified the PM to stay as far away as possible from parliament on Friday.

So RFMF was put in vulnerable position because of stubborn Chaudhry while Rabuka rings Mara to say "I am ready".
