One wonders whether Indo-Fijian voters (and their children who were not even born in 1987) will ever forgive Sitiven Rabuka for the violence and brutality he and his henchmen had unleashed in the name of
indigenous and religious rights?

Many Indo-Fijians see Bainimarama as their only saviour from native Fijian nationalism

In the last week, Professor Wadan Narsey and I have received a stream of threatening e-mails from one calling himself/herself Ranvir Singh; Singh to Victor Lal: 'You know you were dumb, you got kicked out, you cant enter Fiji, the Indians love Frank You know why? The Day Frankie is out, the Indians are fucked!; Your next visit to Fiji will be a memorable one for you, brother Sayed-Khaiyum is waiting anxiously- just don't bend down to pick up the soap in Naboro Prison'

Our IT experts at Fijileaks have cracked Ranvir Singh's real identity and we will expose the person!

A rock and a hard place dichotomy applies when assessing who was a more brutal coupster and ruler - Rabuka (1987 ) or Bainimarama(2006) .
One of the things Rabuka said straight after his military takeover was that he was a simple soldier not well versed in politics . I think he was genuine. He was a military man ( third in the hierarchy ) who was cynically manipulated and used by the defeated Alliance Party of the only post Independence prime minister Ratu Mara who could not stomach the defeat. The Alliance gang then conspired with the chiefly gang and the Methodist church gang and the racist Taukei Movement gang to forment unrest and destabilise the country. The rest of course is history.
In Bainimarama's case he just wanted to grab power for himself. All the subsequent reasons he advanced to justify his takeover were spurious pretexts .
With time Rabuka changed for the better embracing multiracialism and democracy? With time Bainimarama changed for the worse concentrating power into his own hands and that of his right hand man Aiyaz Khaiyum.
That is the reality of Fiji - past and present.

Race was NEVER the reason for the Rabuka coup. It was to get the defeated Alliance Party back in power by the other door ( the coup door ). But that could not be said openly and publicly. So all the bullshit about " Indian domination " and native Fijians being swamped in their own " God given land " was cooked up as a convenient scapegoat . The Indo- Fijians became innocent victims in this power game hatched up by the dishonest Alliance politicians and their cronies . The curse of the suffering and brutalised Indo- Fijians is still hanging over the country. Bainimarama's rise to power and his cosmetic changes - name change and constitution change and flag change etc - has not made any real difference to things in the country in so far as restoration of good democratic governance is concerned.

The Alliance lost because they couldn't get enough votes... Would they have win without Indians? If the answer is 'yes', then the bullshit about Indian domination was no bullshit in the eyes if the nationalists.

The flag has not been changed by the way. I believe Fijians disagree and that is why Bainimarama unofficially renunced to do so.

Editor,
Political leaders of the Wrong Kind
Allow me to bring to the attention of Fiji politics watchers this letter by Di Coussen which gives us an insight into the wrong kind of political leadership.
The letter titled ' Malcolm Turnbull : Power for its own sake the mark of a narcissist ' ( The Age 10/5 ) reads :
" The great legacy of the Turnbull government will be the renovation of The Lodge... Nothing much else of his time will be of value to historians. The continuation of the illegal. unjust policies against asylum seekers will stain this government and all those who support it. The absence of meaningful action on climate change will short-change the future, and the failure to remember his commitment to a republic will show Turnbull to have been a shallow man. While he attained power, no one will know why. The conclusion will be drawn that he longed for power for its own sake, as a trophy, the vain possession of a narcissist".
People who have been following Fiji politics with a critical eye will recognise that narcissistic trait in some of our own "shallow man" who also " attained power " for its own sake rather than the good of the country and its people.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

I would vote for Bainimarama any day over Rabuka. People should ask his role in the mutiny also where while PM he got his millions from to buy his 1,000 acre plus Valavala freehold estate in Vanua Levu. And why he lost the two other jobs he has held -- running a ferry company and running an investment company in Suva? And there are some who seriously consider him to be PM material. Amazing.

If Bainimarama had not come into power in 2006, the qoli qoli and RTU bills would have come into power. Qoliqoli would have destroyed the mainstay of the economy-tourism just as ethnic conflcit and non renewal of land leases destroyed sugar. Today, some of the ethnocentric approaches that were the norm previously are no longer mainstream, thanks again to Bainamarma. Despite what his detractors say, Bainimarama has done immense good to this country.

Rabuka's claim that there was NO OTHER WAY other than a coup was a sprurious claim, a lie just as Bainimarama's claim that HE HAD TO TAKEOVER to " clean up " was a lie. A coup was never a necessity in a small Pacific island country like Fiji, which did not even need to struggle to obtain Independence from British colonial rule.
All coupsters in Fiji, if you include George Speight, had a hidden agenda to carry out a coup.

Truly the Savior! I give Frank that. Yes he did stop the QoliQoli Bill via the coup. But what has he done since then for the tourist industry.
$200 departure tax. 26% additional taxes levied on tourists. Devalued our dollar by 20% without realizing that about 80% of all tourist related food and other items is imported. You now pay about $80 for an average meal in any hotel in Fiji. Hell Fiji water now costs $16 a bottle in the hotels. Point is he is screwing the tourists not the major hoteliers who make millions and do not pay taxes as reveled in the 2015 budget by ASK. This has made Fiji on par with Hawaii as far as expensive destinations go. Right now the only thing going for us is the fact that the world at large is unstable and their are not that many places left that is safe from Islamic nut jobs hence tourists are still coming. When the world gets safer we are going to feel the pinch as you can go to any Asian country and enjoy for less than half the cost than Fiji.
Frank and ASK are destroying the industry and you are calling him a savior. Get real dude and look past the Fiji Sun. Adrenalin water sports has closed its Fiji branch and i hear 2 more popular restaurants are selling in Nadi simply because people cannot afford the food anymore. Its not all roses and honey for those who can see and smell bull shit for what it is.

Rabuka looks like a saint compared to Bainimarama/Kaiyum. There was corruption under Rabuka. But the present ones have redefined what corruption is. Now sums with 4-zeros are not even accepted. If you dont have 5-zeros+ in your bribe bag, dont even start thinking of bribing big shots. Ask John Prasad, former PS Finance.

Comparing the two coupsters, one is an Officer and a gentleman, the other is a narcissist and a marchiavellian. That speaks volume of who needs to be trusted.

"An officer and a gentleman'????

The guy organized a group of military goons with balaclavas who took the Fiji Government hostage in 1987.

Hostage taking is the work of a terrorist, not a professional 'officer and a gentleman'.

If he really was 'an officer and a gentleman' as you claim, then why is he still hiding behind the Immunity Decree? Why all the womanizing? Why all the double-speak?

You need to revise your assessment on the basis of facts.

What difference does it make to the victims or families of dead victims who was more or who was less brutal Rabuka or Bainimarama?
