COWARD: Meghji's EIA consultant reports women objectors to Police and Commissioner Western - the women had stood up to him and pointed out that he was not following Terms of Reference and the Proper Procedures!

What's with Meghji's EIA consultant Sairusi Rokcikavira informing four women at his second attempt at an EIA Public consultation meeting, this after his failed first attempt a week and a half ago, that they (he/the Meghjis) had reported some of  four women present at the meeting to the Police and Commissioner Western.

Looks like he couldn't take the heat with the women standing up to him and pointing out  his  disregard for proper process in convening the first meeting without complying with sections of the Terms of Reference, and their reference to his Government connection as a consultant before the women and others proceeded to walk out leaving him to continue his first "meeting" with just 2 members of the public.

Was this a warning of some kind telling the women for all to hear that "we know who your group are and have reported you to the the Police and Commissioner Western"

What a coward!

Not the first time that women have been harassed in this insulting manner. Three years ago at a Lautoka Chamber of Commerce function, it was volunteered at a Cocktail Part for members of the Chamber that female employees and even businesswomen were routinely sexually harassed at or after such functions. They asked how this might be prevented without risking their livelihoods? They were not alone in their worries and anxiety. A culture of menace and incipient threat often reared its ugly head in Lautoka and in Nadi. It is unlikely that male businessmen had to cope with such unequal treatment. They were the alleged perpetrators!

Some may say that corporate Fiji has now completely taken control over Fiji. Others may perceive such incidents as public examples of how the culture of greed and selfish tendencies have become an accepted part of our culture. Decisions at national level are clearly taken for the benefit of one or more individuals and groups of people at the expense of the majority of our people. Bai and Khai will leave behind a legacy of corruption, greed, torture, and unbridled selfishness when their time is up. When the time comes, we must work conscientiously over many years to deconstruct and totally demolish the evil they have built in our social, economic and political order. This evil culture they have legitimised must die for the necessary rebirth of our nation where the basic truth, justice, transparency, love, respect and appreciation of one another are fundamental values upon which we shall live and evolve. May God bless Fiji

I have only respect and admiration for the women who are prepared to stand up for their rights against the regime and its bully boys. I only have contempt for the bully boys no matter what position they hold in the Bai-Kai dictatorship.

Editor,
In his letter to the Canberra Times( 31/03) Alex Mattea gives us an insight into "... how all political parties are in the pockets of property developers - but none more outrageously so than the Liberals..."
I wonder which political party has that dubious distinction in Fiji?
No prizes for making the right guess, though.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

Editor,
UNHOLY ALLIANCE
" What the public resents most is the collusion between government officials and business people ...Breaking this unholy alliance will be the big test for the leadership" - Chinese economist Yu Yongding in When China Rules the World by Martin Jacques ( 2012,p.285).
Do we have an " unholy alliance" here in the Shirley Parkgate affair?
What is the public perception and why?
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

Dame Zaha Hadid has died at 65. One of the world's foremost architects with buildings which broke the mould around the globe. Whatever would she have made of the planned Blot On The Landscape intended to blight Shirley Park, Lautoka. A Public Space of green and light beside a turquoise sea? Certainly her strong and compelling personality and charisma might have been harnessed to strenuous objection and perhaps is yet! For sure no male official or member of a Chamber of Commerce would ever have had the temerity to 'mess' with her: a paragon of a Pritzker Prize Winner. The late Jay Pritzker once dined in Nadi at Chef's Restaurant. Would HE believe what is being done to Shirley Park?

I'm beginning to doubt the credibility of this "consultant". How is it that he/she overlooks the concerns of the residents of Lautoka, aren't all citizens supposed to have equal rights!! How can a person of such stature not be able to handle discussions with ordinary people when the PM & many MPs are at the ground-level having meetings with cyclone victims & stakeholders. If they scared him or her into calling Police help, than they shouldn't be doing consulting jobs. Really looks corrupt to me.

Editor,
Doing the Right Thing
The Fiji Times has mounted a legal challenge against the Bainimarama Government's decision to award exclusive print advertising to the Fiji Sun ( Fiji Times 1/04).
We eagerly await the outcome of the Fiji Times legal challenge because it pertains to the critically important issue of fairness in contemporary Fiji society.
Is the Government being fair?
Here is an opportunity for the justice system in Fiji to do the right thing by providing an honest answer - without fear and favour.
Will it rise to the challenge?
It's own credibility is on the line.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

The Fiji Times vs Fiji Govt case is an excellent development indeed and has been long overdue. It is like sweet music amidst the thundering roar and pounding noise that has dominated the political music scene in Fiji since 2006. This is more than just a legal challenge by a company. It is the free media fighting for its survival against the force of suppression, distortion and perversion of truth. It is justice and righteousness fighting against the tyranny and decadence of evil and dictatorial rule. It shall also be a litmus test for other government agencies such as the police, judiciary, military and Ficac on their ability to protect the rule of law and public interest. The world shall be watching this case and its proceeding. We may be witnessing the first organised and legal attack against Bai and Khai's kingdom and dictatorial regime. Thank you Fiji Times for standing up for the right. Thank you for your courage and principles. May your victory usher in a new breeze across the corridors of power. Our prayers go with you. Vinaka. Dhanyavad.
