Bala’s case adjourned again

Minister, Parveen Bala’s case has been adjourned again.

He has been charged with Dangerous Driving Occasioning Death.

The case has been adjourned to the 26th of this month to fix another trial date.

A 48‑year‑old man was crossing the road in Teidamu Lautoka when he was allegedly hit by Bala in November 2013.

He was taken to the hospital but died three hours later. Source: Fijivillage News

I think Shereen might be able to tell us why we have such a disgraceful state of affairs when it comes to applying the law on the transgressions of a government minister?

When will people realise that the leaders of this government do not care about ethics, nor do they care at this time what the public, the people who voted them into office, think.
The very fact that they appointed Bala Minister for Transport, showed their contempt of ethics and lack of concern. That the judiciary appears to be a party to this farce speaks volumes and is destroying the publics trust in the rule of law.
This government may well have introduced a number of good measures, but it seems inevitable that they will leave a despicable legacy, mainly due to the arrogance of one man.

NOT JUST ONE MAN!!

The Bala saga and many, many others that Victor Lal has unveiled is not just the making or arrogance of one man. Rather, its the cancer that has engulfed all the 3 arms of the government - legislature, executive and the judiciary. Given that its the executive which always controls the legislature, its the judiciary which must at all times act as a bulwark against the rule of law (ROL), especially in Fiji where the fourth arm - the media is the government's lap dog and the SODELPA opposition which is virtually defunct.

Rather than enforcing the ROL, the judiciary has become the executive's house trained poodle, spearheaded by CJ gates and his sri Lankan recruited judges who can hardly speak and write good English. No country in the world ever had a CJ who was part of the government's delegation to the UN to beat his trumpets about the government's good human rights record, making an absolute farce of the doctrine of separation of powers.

Cry Fiji cry!!!

Editor,
re : Nature of Governance in the New Fiji.
We learn from topic news 16/10 under ' Union stays away ' that the Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions will not sign the joint implementation report required by the ILO because their proposals and agreements were not met at the recent Employment Relations Advisory Board meeting in Suva on Wednesday. FICTU general secretary Attar Singh said though they went into ERAB meeting with a genuine desire to contribute, their requirements were not met, therefore, they would now await the ILO's decision.
And, in the Fiji Times editorial ' What an ILO inquiry means for Fiji ' 17/10 we read that the Fiji Trade Union Congress General secretary Daniel Urai said there was no point attending the meeting because Government would not change its position.
Between the two trade unions they represent the bulk of the workers in the country.
Then we read in the Fiji Times16/10 that speaking at the Australia-Fiji Business Forum in Sydney on 16/10 PMVoreqe Bainimarama said " Fiji was hopeful of the critical discussions that would revitalise national economic well-being".
Whose well- being? The business class and the political class in Fiji?
What about the workers? Is the Bainimarama Government paying any real attention to that in compliance with ILO standards?
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

What may be legal is not always ethical. There are many cases that I have observed that this government does not care about ethics, as long as there is a legal justification. Praveen Bala's Case is one example, the other is the appointment of the new President where Konrote is clearly a political party supporter (although legally he has resigned). I wonder what legal justification the AG will come up with on his non compliance with the law regarding the declaration of his assets.

Talk about the benefits of being part of the regime, where one can escape prosecution even if it means taking the live of another in the process.

Bala's case being adjourned is clearly an example of escaping justice at the expense of the victim that suffered in silence.

So sad, and so wrong on all levels of governance where anything related to ethics is thrown out the window.
