AIYAZ KHAIYUM'S GOVERNMENT HAS RECOMMENDED THE SUSPENSION OF RATU NAIQAMA FOR A PERIOD OF TWO YEARS. TWO MEMBERS OF OPPOSITION ON THE COMMITTEE DISAGREED - THEIR REPORT IS SEPARATE - BUT PART OF THIS REPORT. IT WAS TABLED THIS MORNING - WILL BE DEBATED LATER POSSIBLE TODAY - LIKELY TO BE PASSED BECAUSE OF GOVERNMENT NUMBERS; Fijileaks: We hold no brief for Lalabalavu nor condone his attack on the Speaker. What we condemn in the strongest term is the DOUBLE STANDARD of Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum - within two days he got a judgment against Lalabalavu and yet it took months for Khaiyum to find a magistrate to try Parveen Bala for allegedly causing death by dangerous driving; worst, Bala gets one promotion after another in Government - so a slur on a Speaker is so grave that Lalabalavu must be banned from Parliament for two years and a family which lost its only bread winner are still waiting for justice and closure! COME ON!

So very true, could the reason be that the magistrates all have integrity, yet do not want to hear the case because it would result in their termination. Why not refer the case to the High Court ?...Same problem.. Clearly Bala has powerful but misguided friends....

TWO YEARS??? It is rather harsh a penalty. The man didn't lie down on the table as a sign of protest or attempt anything violent. I agree fully that Lalabalavu should be punished but the duration of the punishment is extremely severe in this instance.

Phucking Hell ! Two Years for calling a puppet Speaker of Parliament in Fiji's pretentious democracy by some unflattering name! That says a lot about the mental maturity of the Gang in Government in Fiji.

PM too should be hauled in as well. He continues to hurl vulgur slurs at anyone and everyone but not a single action has been taken out against him. I strongly dispute this decision because it went one way only. Its a mockery of the systems in place and should not be condoned. You want to discipline others so be man and start from within. Otherwise its obvious they have other motives in mind - to weaken the Opposition by hook or by crook. By the way, I dont support either party. My point is about fairness - period!

Bainimarama has been hurling abusive and offensive remarks at public persons since he became a dictator PM. This parliament has been hypocritical beginning at the top.

Yes Fiji has returned to democracy - dictatorship style. And this case is evidence of that.

Sad but true. Khaiyum is fanning the flames that may burn and harm our nation. The military coup was a terrible mistake by Voreqe and his cohorts. But what they have done post coup has radically changed Fiji. Many do not realise how much Khaiyum's arrogance and dictatorial behaviour is being talked about. His band of bodyguards have also experienced his very insensitive and selfish nature. They almost lost their lives in the Wainibuka River while travelling with him as his protection detail. Many ministers do not have bodyguards but Khaiyum needs more. When will this man learn basic human values and decency? I hope he changes because the longer he continues, the greater the flames will burn and the more of our citizens that will be affected.

Ratu Nailatikau as Speaker 2001 - 2006 ...what did he do to desclipline MP's for making racist attacks in Parliament? Was Naiqama one of them then too?

Typical of Bhaiyum, record your opponents but keep yourselves out and unheard in order to dispose of them with severest punishment possible. Nothing new to me at all on their Iron Censorship on the media and anything they say or do in parliament.

For carrying out the coup they followed the Pakistan model. For the persecution of their opponents and critics they follow the Malaysia model - just put them through a predetermined due process or tribunal.
