What acting police commissioner Qiliho says is quite predictable. He is after all a handpicked political appointee of the dictator Frank Bainimarama his military coup leader. His role is to do the dictators bidding and to bluff to the people of Fiji.

The citizens of Fiji ought to be alarmed when the Fijian army acquires more weapons. It is an army that has gone rogue and terrorised the citizens it is meant to protect. It is a bloated army eating up precious national budget which should go towards meeting the social needs of the people. Why such a bloated army for a country of 850,000 people?

And one of the main reasons why the world is in such a mess with so much human suffering is because of what the militaries around the world purchase.

In relation to your earlier post trying to correct me about the AK47 and denigrating he fact that I was a soldier and the concomitant professional knowledge that goes with it, please.read the extract below which should stop the 'shits' you are currently suffering from by my earlier response:

Just a question Commisioner; never in Fiji's history of policing Laws has a security firm been given more powers than the Police - is this the beginning of what to expect during your watch? Just prior to being appointed as top-dog, you recruited into the military criminal elements who had maimed and killed citizens of Fiji - what's next??

Nothing sinister, except they did not want anyone to know...the response from CP stinks, after all a private security firm with ties to the military provides escort instead of police who appear to have surrendered their role.

I don't get how bringing in more guns or even a different brand of guns (whether made in US, Russia or China) will enhance FMF's capabilities in a desert if they simply don't know how to defend themselves in the first place and use those damned things, instead of giving it away for free the minute they're cornered by armed elements in pyjamas.

Come on 'Splash'...before you make these sorts of unhelpful and denigrating comments, please go read and understand the difference between Chapters 6 & 7 of the UN Charter when it come to peacekeeping operations.

The govt's decision to deal with the Russians and accept military aid from them while Russia is a major player backing one of the warring sides in a highly polarised Middle East could endanger the lives of our peacekeepers. In the Middle East you are either neutral or you are in one of the two warring camps. That's how they see things. When 45 of Fiji peacekeepers surrendered to the Al Nusra Front last year both the Al Nusra and Israel accused our peacekeepers with siding with the other side led by the Syrian Govt and backed by Russia, Iran and Herzbullah. This acceptance of assistance from the Russians will further cement the view held by the other side that Fiji is aligned with Russia and the Syrian Coalition. Al Nusra is backed by Arab Nations allied to the west such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Turkey and also Israel. The acceptance of the Russian "gift" to the RFMF will present a direct threat to these powers. I doubt very much Govt took these factors into account when accepting the Russian aid

You may be right. But I really don't care. I am a civilian and many years ago served a tour of duty in the ME. I am not here to defend the RFMF. They can do so themselves. I am happy to provide another perspective and if you are angry at that, then its your problem not mine.

Those were noble times when you served your tour-of-duty Vili, but times have changed and perceptions too by Fiji citizens. For the first time ever, we do not have confirmed heads of the Military, Police & Prisons and giving a private security company more powers than the Police over this latest arms shipment can never be good except producing all the wrong signals and people are worried!! Debate over why the 40 surrendered instead of standing their ground will continue for many years, but i'm glad they did what they did and still alive to be with their families. All the militatry needs to do today is continue with its military games or whatever, but never touch another citizen, ever again, in anger....that is when you lose the right to protect us!!
