Lack of respect for religious rights
Mr Mahendra Chaudhry also raised issue with the shocking lack of respect shown by the authorities to the religious sensitivities of a community in Delaivuna, Taveuni.
A Hindu temple was forced to open its doors to evacuees even when the priests complained that people were cooking meat on temple premises. They suggested instead that the nearby school be used as an evacuation centre.
But the security forces ignored their pleas and threatened to break down the door if it was not opened voluntarily. The same thing happened at the time of Cyclone Winston.
The community is infuriated at such disrespect and disregard shown to their religious rights and sensitivities.
“I do not blame them. I call on the authorities to show respect for the rights and religious beliefs of other communities –even in times of emergency,”

Where the evacuees a mixed bunch, including HINDUS? Sorry, Cyclone Yasa didn't discriminate or spare the community on the basis of their religion? What if Hindus were forced to take shelter in a Mosque or Church? These Ponga Priests should have opened the TEMPLE on the condition that no meat or alcohol was consumed on the temple premises, instead of demanding that the security forces opened up the School to the evacuees. Is that what their HINDU Religion teaches them? They are lucky that the security forces didn't lift their dhotis and gave them a few rounds of lathis, to remind them of their duty as HINDUS
