Last November, Fijileaks was tipped off on the new appointment but
Nigel Healey did not respond to our inquiries:

Coming soon: Discrimination in FNU's Department of Levy and Grants!

"Staffs are not allowed to use personal phones during working hours. If any staff has to attend to an urgent call then he needs to leave the office, by the time you leave the phone is disconnected. But again this only applies to those who question the Manager about this. However, the manager charges his phone and answers calls in his personal phone when in office. Does this rule not apply to him as he is the manager???"

The new appointment is certainly welcome news. Prof Healey does have the necessary background and academic leadership to take on the job. Further , given the new VC comes from an external environment it is expected that he would have the independence and fairness in dealing with so many critical issues pertaining to academic integrity and staffing issues facing FNU.

Having said that, the job ahead for the new VC does have its share of challenges. The Council under which the FNU as an institution failed is still there. Two previous appointees to serve at VC level , Ganesh Chand and Ian Rouse failed . The institution has heaps of unresolved issues and common goals are not shared by all stakeholders. The education minister who had been a partner in crime with chand and rouse is still there despite his dismal performance as a minister and still having his negative influence on FNU.

To get FNU to a solid platform to progress, the authorities may need to dissolve the FNU Council and appoint a new one. The bus drivers, photographers, self centered trade unionists and other ganesh chand buddies will no longer be relevant as council members if the uni is to move forward. The education minister who has been part of the FNU rot and has a capability gap needs to be transferred to another portfolio. Instead of seriously tackling education issues , he had kept himself busy by bad mouthing his master Khaiyum.

Be that as it may, the expectation is that Prof Healey will do whatever it takes to heal the sick FNU.

the students enrolment shows a big decrease in no of student's interested to study in FNU. compare what they had before and now.

Ganesh used to be aggressive and get numbers and he sued to send e mails in early mornings so get all moving. he only used to sleep while travelling and keeps staff alert all the time

Ian came and was on face book all day but never got any e mails as early as what staff used to get. staff used to relax.

lets see if the new VC will be able to manage 36 locations of FNU. wish him all the best.

if the new VC fails, it will be a slap on governments face as any changes are brought up by them.
if anyone who will be successful will be the one with a lot of commitment and will have to take a lot of time.

Kavita's comment is strange. By all measures, FNU has been a huge success. Kavita should name any University in the world which achieved such success in 5 years from its start. The success is attributed to one man - Dr. Ganesh Chand.

But as always in Fiji, success breeds contempt. 2 Ministers in this Government, could not see and digest this success - these are our own Reddy, and his boss Aiyaz Khaiyum. They had to fire Dr. Chand. Unfortunately they brought in Ian Rouse who destroyed the credibility of the University within weeks.

We work at FNU. While some rejoiced at Dr. Chand's firing because now they could do whatever they wanted, when we see the corruption and nepotism, all regret the firing. Do you know that for the first time in FNU's history, workers did not received any bonus of pay rise before xmas? Yes, even if these were small sums, all workers used to received bonuses for xmas. That was Dr. Chand. So when people like Kavita hit the keyboard, they should get the facts right. Starting with preconceived bias against a highly successful VC will not cut. We know this first hand.

Dear Matter of Fact
I am sorry to say, but, your love for Ganesh Chand has really blinded you to see FNU matters objectively. Your definitions of success and failure are bound to leave organizational management gurus turning in their graves. One does not need to be Peter Drucker to work out the status of FNU.

No one is indispensible – not even Ganesh Chand . Whether you work for FNU and/or are a Ganesh Chand proxy to this forum or ‘ I LOVE ME’ Ganesh Chand, your attempted SPIN is CHEAP.
As a matter of fact, GC is a sacked VC and facing court charges of abuse of office. He has run FNU like a despot and his victims are still crying for justice and possibly more governance related charges. How on earth can you isolate him from other key players and call him a goodie goodie. Unlike the shorter stints of Rouse, bus driver and photographer, GC, held the substantive VC position and for over 5 years.

Has corruption and nepotism started at FNU only after GC departure? That is one year back???

And it is difficult to see how GC can be isolated from Reddy and Khaiyum when they were in a cosy cosy threesome relationship … Before... During…and.. After. I mean in relation to the September elections. Had the three not done the FF manifesto, the annual budgets and aspects of labour and education reforms? What is your basis to say that GC sacking was due to jealously of Reddy and Khaiyum and not on performance?

Look Ganesh Chand, your attempt to put a SPIN to get sympathy will not succeed as there are heaps about FNU rot in the public domain. You were the leader. But I do understand your motivation – you are trying to get a platform after falling out with your FFP buddies. And also creating an impression before the upcoming court case. Tough luck.

Professor Healey's welcome arrival MUST be matched with the current FNU Council's long-awaited departure!!!
The whole Council membership must Go and allow fresh air to infiltrate all spheres of the FNU leadership. Too many 'deadwood' that need casting adrift so FNU can grow new soots. To you Council members, the rot permeating through FNU happened because of your inability to instill 'class' and your sheer lack of depth and integrity. Please leave!!
