GIRMITGATE AND FOOD FOR THOUGHT. It is shocking how RABUKA's GIRMIT celebration organisers are distorting so much of Girmit history in Fiji. We will highlight a few as we turn our focus to GIRMIT celebrations

GIRMIT LEGACY. SAVED BY THEIR SWEAT, TOIL AND TEARS:
"The displacement of the Indian indentured labourers prevented the dispossession of the i-Taukei Fijians. This may be the lasting and most significant contribution of the peasants from India. Without this the i-Taukei might have lost much of their land, and more tragically, their self-respect."

"When we arrived in Fiji we were hearded into a punt like pigs and taken to Nukulau where we stayed for a fortnight. We were given rice full of worms and kept and fed like animals. Later we were separated into groups for various employers to choose who they wanted. We got to Navua and were given a three-legged pot, a large spoon, a bucket and a billycan, and some rice. We then went to Nakaulevu where we saw the lines."

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Just look at this shocking, and actually disgusting, 'Expression of Interest: Authentic Indian Food Stalls', advert from the Suva City Council.
​*The Girmitiyas were never served such food on the coolie ships, in the coolie lines, nor on the plantations. 
*We know that Indo-Fijian food is a mixture of Indian, i-Taukei and Other influences, as is food among the Indo-Caribbeans. 
*The organisers are 'Johnny-Jenny Come Lately' individuals, handed thousands of dollars by BIMAN PRASAD to whitewash Sitiveni Rabuka's COUP on 14 May 1987.
*In fact, the celebrations must end with a sketch of Rabuka and ten of his masked gunmen storming Parliament and ending Indo-Fijians triumphant march, despite hardship, from Plantation to Parliament, with the racist loudly proclaiming 'INDIANS WILL NEVER RULE FIJI'.
