In Defence of Advisory Councillors

Often times we hear people criticising and even swearing at Advisory Councillors and their service. Yes there are some who have been involved in malpractice and neglect. We know who they are and we will deal with them.

However, for the past few weeks I have worked with some of the Advisory Councillors in the West and found out how hard they work. Sometimes they walk on foot or ride on horses to reach people and list their names for assistance or to assess damage by disasters.

They have waited with me for hours in the heat without food and water for ration trucks to arrive and then organise delivery to each and every home, sometimes at their own expense, so that people at least have food on their tables.

As I write this my team of Advisory Councillors are still distributing ration in various areas of the West on trucks hired by them in the dark of the night and in the rain. Yesterday they delivered ration until 3 in the morning. Of course they can't reach all the places but it won't hurt people to take a few steps and reach your councillors.
Some of these Advisory Councillors also have their houses damaged but they chose to serve the people first and repair their homes second.

The service they provide is for a meagre allowance (it used to be free service before) and they haven't even received their allowances for the past few months. They battle abuses, criticism, swearing, insults etc from the people they serve on phone or in person yet their spirits are not dampened. They continue their job.
I salute all my hardworking Advisory Councillors around the country and ask them to keep up with the hard work. (P.S Needless to say if you have meritorious complaints about your Advisory Councillors please refer them to me and I will deal with them without bias). We understand the need not to give the names of the complainants. But no reason to without the name of the DO and other crooked officials engaged in corruptly diverting relief supplies for sale.
Come on, name and shame!

This is what happens when cronies are handpicked and put into high positions rather than selecting people on merit. Now can Ashneel Sudhakar investigate and report to us on what merit this person was appointed DO Taveuni and when?

Editor,
A True Leader
We learn from ' Moving Burial of Honduran Indigenous Leader in her Native City' ( LAHT 6/03 ) that Berta Caceras,44, the courageous, admired, respected and loved leader and founder of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organisations of Honduras or Copinh, was killed Thursday at her home by two gunmen.
Friends, family and political leaders including Honduran ex- President Manuel Zelaya travelled to La Esperanza to attend the funeral. The thousands who came to bid their final farewell included representatives of organisations in Brazil, the US, Switzerland, Mexico and Central America.
In 2015 Caceras was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize for her fight in defence of natural resources of Honduras.
One of her daughters said that a Honduran- Chinese joint venture that plans to build a hydroelectric dam was behind her mother's death." This is a political crime...we hold that company and Aqua Zarca project responsible ... because she ( Caceras) always denounced the systematic threats by that company".
Caceras family plan to sue the Honduran government over the killing, she added, while calling on international investigators to become involved in the murder probe.
If indeed a multi-national company was behind the killing as alleged it won't be the first time that has happened. There are many examples of whole tribes of people slaughtered or forcefully removed to clear the way for mining and logging interests in the Amazon and elsewhere.
My own gut feeling is that Caceras was taken out because vested interests found her environmental activism unpalatable.
Yes nothing must be allowed to stand in the way of the profit making of big capitalist interests.
We know that only too well.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

Sorry I cannot see the connection between Western Advisory Councillors in a disaster response situation and FFP Parliamentarian, Ashneel Sudhakar. Have I missed something, has he been appointed the Minister for Disaster Management ad Rural Development? Otherwise, what legitimacy does he have to issue the statement?

NGO's only went in to fill in the shoes for the Govt disaster team who FAILED to provide rations to these communities in 2 weeks.

Maybe they did not have Fiji First Party BUS, RFMF trucks or Govt Ministers 4WD to borrow to supply rations to Ba.

BUT they have ships only that can send rations to far and give to all villagers even if half of them may not be in same situation as others.

Then we hear 2kg flour, rice etc are given to these people...

If Government can't be trusted to disperse relief supplies fairly and efficiently and the NGOs lack the capital and human assets to fill in the void who can we rely on?

The Chinese Communist Party punished 300,000 of its members for corruption in 2015 ( Abc news 8/03).
Wonder whether any of them had any dealings with our mob?

2010 SAME 2016 SAME SHIT. CIVIL SERVANTS IN TAVEUNI SERVE THEMSELVES. THEY STEAL FROM THE DONORS AND GIVE TO THEMSELVES A TREAT INCLUDING THEIR TAVALE'S AND TOVU'S AND THE VILLAGE THEY COME FROM. I CAN GUARANTEE YOU NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. NOTHING AT ALL. BUNCH OF PARASITES OF THE LOWEST LEVEL POSSIBLE.
