“Government passed legislation in April to penalise card holders who abuse the system by making false claims. Well, it must now investigate these companies and they must be prosecuted, if found guilty of malpractice."

Hardware companies abuse Help for Homes swipe-cards

Fiji Labour Party is calling on the government to put a stop to, and investigate, the scandalous abuse of Help for Homes swipe cards by hardware companies.

Labour Leader Mahendra Chaudhry who is in Ba today said he was appalled to see how three hardware companies, RC Manubhai, Vinod Patel and Carpenters, were taking unfair advantage of the system by offering some cash back to card holders.

“What they are doing is not only unlawful, it is downright unscrupulous,” Mr Chaudhry said.

These hardware companies have set up booths in schools where cards are being issued. They grab the cardholders as soon as they receive their cards and offer them some cash back in return for dealing with them.

“A $1500 card receives a cash back of $60, $3000 card holder gets $120 and those with $7000 cards receive $300 in cash. Carpenters gives out food vouchers instead of cash. This is clearly defrauding the system.

“Moreover, it is well known that hardware companies have run out of building materials. But the card is swiped for the full amount it holds. Card holders are then issued invoices with the assurance that they can retrieve the materials later when stocks arrive.

“The card holders are made to run from pillar to post over the ensuing weeks because the merchants do not have the items in stock. In some cases, they offer other goods, non-building materials, in exchange for the money,” Mr Chaudhry said.

Mr. Chaudhry said there has also been numerous complaints from card holders that these hardware companies were over-charging them for the goods. The prices were higher than those provided in the list put out initially.

“This is clearly a scam and we call for a full investigation into this malpractice. Hapless victims of the cyclone are being bribed by offers of cash and taken undue advantage of. Money is being taken but goods are not supplied. And on occasions, goods other than building supplies are being sold in exchange,” said Mr Chaudhry.

“Government passed legislation in April to penalise card holders who abuse the system by making false claims. Well, it must now investigate these companies and they must be prosecuted, if found guilty of malpractice,” he said.

Goodness gracious! Phew...now try and list some national scams we recall, and outstanding from the Alliance Government days to now…to name a few; Government supplies scam, NBF scam, FDB scam, FHL scam, Vatukoula Ore scan, Agricultural scam, now the alleged Hardware scam…scam…scam…scam.

Would it be justified to ask if the 2nd and 3rd generation descendants of those” scam “architects and benefactors” owe us all and the state to pay up?...

Viney Gounder don't worry about who runs this site. Just stick yo the issues, not the person.(s). Welcome to non mainstream media where u learn things that the mainstream media won' or can't print and where you are given more leeway to express your viewpoint not normally afforded by the mainstream media. You can come and go as u please as it is free and if u are uncomfortable with it you can go back to reading the Sydney Morning Herald,

No respite for Fiji's poor - hardware companies the latest to climb the bandwagon. Before Hardware-gate, there was FLP-fundraising-gate whereby FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry raised money in the name of the poor than pocketed the proceeds, and shared loot with family. Daughter received 50k and beta Rajen was beneficiary of house in Sydney and later funded law business in Auckland. No remorse or apology from chor chaudhry khandan (clan) as it felt strong sense of entitlement to the ill-gotten, stolen wealth.

We are forever grateful to Victor Lal for exposing 'champion of the poor' mahendra's asli roop (real character)

Mahen chaudhry your own words apply to you: what you did with money raised in the name of the poor is 'both unlawful and unscrupulous' also. The sooner you and your speechwriter Asha LAkhan understand, the better.

It is really ludicrous to note that wherever there is a scam, MP Chaudhary appears, it is like "set a thief to catch a thief". This guy smells scams.

This is why prosecution waives a charge to accomplice of crime if they become informer to put his comrade in the prison instead.

However in this instance where loot is left with the scammer, to enjoy from it, instead of passing onto its rightful owners, this would be biggest scam in judicial history of inaction to public knowledge.

The fact remains , only a handful of Hardware companies were given this special treatment. No competition allows , and you talk about Equal opportunity and commerce commission legislation about "Free and Fair trading BULLSHIT . " Basically " masi polo " syndrome. So the major hardware now cannot supply , duh !!! ASK recommendations back fired. No corruption "allowed" what a bunch of fools. People still waiting its a fact.
