The former ACP Nasir Ali who claims Bala was behind plot to kill Bainimarama

"Apart from this [dangerous driving causing death] charges against PRAVEEN BALA the Attorney-General AIYAZ SAYED KHAIYUM very well knew of his illegal activities because I had personally briefed him. I had also briefed the former CP Teleni and his deputy and had showed evidence against PRAVEEN BALA and others for their involvement in 2000 Coup and the attempt to kill the Commander Bainimarama...I was stopped from directing the investigations" - former ACP Nasir Ali, on his Facebook posting, 13/6/2016

* Did Aiyaz Khaiyum inform Frank Bainimarama of Nasir Ali's allegations?
* Is Khaiyum complicit in protecting FFP Minister Bala over the murder plot, if we are to believe the former ASP Nasir Ali's serious allegations?
* Was Bala vetted before he was given a FFP ticket to contest election?
* Many Indo-Fijian businessmen who are now prominent FFP financiers stand accused of funding the 2000 coup
* Bala was allegedly one of those waiting to become a Cabinet Minister if the Bloody Mutiny had succeeded in November 2000

THE first two witnesses in the trial of Local Government Minister Parveen Kumar said they never saw the driver of the car that fatally hit Lautoka farmer, Puna Chand, on November 7, 2013.

Mr Chand's wife, Arun Wati, said she saw her husband being mowed down, but did not see who was behind the wheel because the driver did not get out of the car.

She said she was more concerned about attending to her injured husband, who was bleeding from the ears.

The second State witness, Ami Chand, said he was travelling from Ba to Lautoka when he came across the accident.

He said when he arrived he saw some security officers lifting Mr Chand to the side of the road.

He saw a white car parked on the side of the road, but did not see the driver.

Mr Kumar is facing one charge of dangerous driving occasioning death in relation to the death of Mr Chand.

Ms Wati said she was waiting along Kings Rd near their Teidamu home at around 2.25pm when she saw her husband being hit by the car travelling towards Lautoka.

She said she saw her husband land on the gravel path from the impact of the collision and saw blood coming out of his ears.

She said three men, including a neighbour, and prosecution witness Ami Chand came to her aid.

She said her husband was put into Mr Chand's vehicle and taken to the Lautoka Hospital.

During cross examination by defence lawyer Devanesh Sharma, the prime witness had an emotional breakdown and the court was forced to take a five-minute recess.

Before the break, Mr Sharma grilled Ms Wati on her evidence and police statement, adding that some of her facts were not adding up.

He said four security officers from Matrix Security had in fact stopped to carry Mr Chand to the side of the road after he was hit.

Mr Sharma said his instructions from the accused was that the 48-year-old victim had crossed the road from behind the bus that he had disembarked and did not check to see if the road was clear.

He said his instructions were also that the deceased should be blamed for the unfortunate incident.

Mr Sharma told Ms Wati she had not witnessed the accident and was not at the scene of the accident.
In response, Ms Wati said she was not lying.

She said her husband was dead and that she should not be accused of lying because she was the first person to see what had happened.

The second witness said he drove the victim and a hysterical Ms Wati, who was covered in her husband's blood, to hospital for treatment.

The victim was taken to the Lautoka Hospital for emergency treatment, but later died in the Intensive Care Unit. Source: Fiji Times

Victor, in the interests of accuracy, the question I asked the PM in the Sky interview you have quoted was: "How close a shave was it?" not "how close save was it"? Meaning a narrow escape from danger or disaster, as the dictionary puts it. Vinaka. GD

Bala will escape jail. Even if he spends a night in Natabua prison for this death, I will quit commenting on political affairs for ever. This regime will find ways for him to escape jail. Already a case is made that there is no proof beyond reasonable doubt that he was the driver. Puna died because of his fault.

Bala after this trial, whatever the outcome, will be to the Fiji First Party in the 2018 elections what Rabuka is to SODELPA, both are damaged goods with a history that other parties will exploit.

Rt Sai, my problem is with people like you who don't give a shit about accuracy of any sort. And that includes your fanciful anecdote.

Saved by the bell

something that you say when a difficult situation ends suddenly before you have to do or say something that you do not want to:
Luckily my bus arrived before I had time to reply. Saved by the bell.

Gool it Rt Sai

We are yet to check the original typed script of the interview - whether it was SAVE or SHAVE. Whatever it was, Graham Davis is correct in pointing it out; it could have been a typo error on Fijileak's part some years ago.

We hope the matter has been settled.

Thanks

'Shave and Save' relates to a campaign led by Rev James Baghwan for support for children and others suffering from cancer in Fiji. Rachel Baghwan, his gracious mother - May She Rest In Peace - and his sister, Sharon have both suffered from this greatly feared illness. Both ladies have given so much hope and space to thousands of Fijian women and children by ensuring a safe outlet to tell their intimate stories of singular struggles against pain, violence and chronic sickness in the midst of instability and natural disasters. There were six recorded rapes in the Western Division of Fiji in June (Fiji Sun) However, it is likely that those unrecorded due to reluctant non-reporting may be far higher. By checking in person the logs at two Western Police Posts, it was found in 2013 that imposed reconciliations were interfering with Due Process. Victims of attempted and aggravated rape thus were left in despair. One such victim had been left lying bleeding on the road outside our home in the middle of the night. Police Cpl. Arvind picked her up in his own car and took her for treatment. A single act of courage and care when no one else would respond. One victim of rape was obliged to seek medical care in New Zealand but became suicidal upon her return and required hospitalization. These are the stories that FEMLINK radio has been recording and facilitating since 2000 in Fiji. Lest we forget ....... Post Cards from Fiji in 2001! Thank You Sharon and James and to all your dedicated staff over dozens of years.
