“Vulagi” in i-Taukei colloquial means special guests or visitors on a short visit. Otherwise vulagi is used euphemistically to describe foreigners like Indo-Fijians were referred to by the i Taukei movement in 1987, led by Coupist Sitiven Rabuka, Co-Coupist Ratu Inoke Kubuabola and Apisai Tora & CoFijileaks: We will write in greater detail about Rabuka's 'bullsh*t spin on the word Vulagi. The word is as common as dalo to all of us who were born and grew up in Fiji. Whenever our Indo-Fijian relatives visited us for weddings or funerals, we always referred to them to our i-taukei neighbours and friends as 'oh, our vulagi families from Rakiraki, Levuka, Lautoka etc'. In other words, they were our guests or visitors. |
