ITS NO EASY WALK THROUGH SHIRLEY PARK: Protestors refuse to lie down and be bulldozed over for Meghjis to build hotel in re-zoned area!

Shirley Park Re-Zoning Objectors Speak Out:

A Public Hearing on the rezoning of Shirley Park was held at the Fiji Sugarcane Growers Hall Lautoka on the 2nd February 2015.
The objectors have called for a fresh hearing based on the following issues which must be addressed by The Director of Town and Country Planning:

(1) The objectors were not properly informed of the hearing. Only two of the five objectors were notified.

(2) A petition with more than 500 signatures was not included as one of the objectors called, and there was confusion on the part of Town and Country Planning in having the wrong reference.

(3) The public at large should have been properly informed about the public hearing as this concerns a civic entity

(4) In the advertisement in the Fiji Sun, 4 August 2014, the public was informed only of the proposed rezoning of (part of) Lot 1 ND5149 of Shirley Park; however in the  week before the hearing, the 5 objectors have since been informed that (part of) DP 1805 which is also in Shirley Park, has now been included and attached  to the original area to be rezoned

(5) By restricting public notices to the one newspaper the FIJI Sun, information is not being disseminated to the public at large. Had all media outlets been used, the likelihood of a larger number of objections would have been heard.

The objectors also question why some of the public at the hearing were told they were not permitted inside the hearing and then proceeded to leave, this before others were finally allowed into the hall. Why  were news reporters also not allowed in?

CAUGHT OUT: The Director of Town and Country Planning was forced to respond after she was informed that Romit Meghji was planning to commence building in Shirley park - Losana Rokotuibau believed the protestors were in the dark, so she had sat on documents for four and half months - when caught out, she claimed she had memory lapse, forgot to inform the protestors-was her forgetfulness bloody intentional?

Dekho the opportunity given to the public to raise objections is all bullshit. It is going through the pretence of doing things in a democratic manner - with transparency , accountability and public scrutiny. Fact is this was already a deal done. It is a classic case of the local political elite and the economic elite colluding to defraud the public of its public asset - the Shirley Park - with a cynical and unscrupulous "re-zoning" ploy.

Everything about this dicey, deal on Shirley Park is wrong and corrupt. This can't happen in a democracy. There are procedures. There is a gross breach of trust between the Lautoka City Council and rate-payers.

This neo-Mogul, Khaiyum feels so empowered so as to have the ability to 'GIFT' this public park and space to his party supporter - Meghji. But the simple truth is - he can’t.

The people of Lautoka - Please keep the pressure on.

Praise to Maude Elbourne and group for doing a fine job. Keep this Park for our children. How can we order a tee-shirt ? What else can we do to support ?

Every good citizen should avoid and boycott Meghji's products.

Portion of Parks can be converted to other uses in the national interest, normally this would be for essential service providers such as Space for Fire Brigade Station,Ambulance Services etc and has to be strategically located.

Not for commercial purposes under any circumstances.

To give ratepayers of Lautoka a faint of hope, refer to a case in Suva where State was taken to Court for changing a green reserve into residential zone along Muanikau Rd. The State lost the case.

With such precedence it is a gross abuse of the process by DTCP to even consider such an aghast development, not only is it ignoring the voices of the ratepayers but is also failing in it's lawful discharge of duty.

Surely heads must roll.

Let's not - to use a popular Fiji media expression - mince our words. This Shirley Park "re-zoning" deal is a CLEAR CUT CASE OF OFFICIAL CORRUPTION .
One has to be an intellectual imbecile to think it isn't.
