But what about Minister Parveen Bala, seen here with Dorsami Naidu before their failed bid to seize control of Then India Sangam Fiji?

"I then received a text message and I have got copies of that here, which I am happy to pass on to the Committee, from Vijay Narayan who is a News Editor of Communications Fiji Limited and the Legend News Station and he said: "Bula Sir, you had raised a Point of Order saying that Draunidalo called Reddy a fool, she then got up and said 'calling us dumb natives, you idiot'. Will this matter be taken further? Thanks, Vijay...My response was, "I did not hear the second part, did you hear it?" He then responded and said: "I have the recording, Hansard should have it, it was very clear." I then said, "Okay". I then went immediately to the Honorable Speaker and showed her his text message. I said I did not hear it, and she said that she did not hear it ..." Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum to Privileges Committee

Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum's evidence to the Privileges Committee:

Witness No 1: Hon Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum.

What then happened I will tell you the full story, Mr Chairman.

When we broke for morning tea, I met Honorable Draunidalo and said to her, "Why do you get so violent in your reactions?"

She sort of smiles. I have known her from before, in fact she worked for me, I was her Manager when I was working for the Colonial Group of Companies. So I do have a relationship with her and I asked her, "Why do you get so violent?" I said, "You did not have to call him a fool." I said.

"You could have come up with a smart response like, "Well, we are not as obtuse as you are. "Obtuse means thick, you could have said that, and that is acceptable. She said, "Aw, I am not as eloquent as you are" and that is where we left it. I then went and sat down, Mr Chairman, to have my tea.

I then received a text message and I have got copies of that here, which I am happy to pass on to the Committee, from Vijay Narayan who is a News Editor of Communications Fiji Limited and the Legend News Station and he said:

"Bula Sir, you had raised a Point of Order saying that Draunidalo called Reddy a fool, she then got up and said 'calling us dumb natives, you idiot'. Will this matter be taken further? Thanks, Vijay.

My response was, "I did not hear the second part, did you hear it?"

He then responded and said: "I have the recording, Hansard should have it, it was very clear."

I then said, "Okay".

I then went immediately to the Honorable Speaker and showed her this text message. I said I did not hear it, and she said that she did not hear it and then I said,

"Well, let us see what the Hansard says", for me to be able to respond to Vijay.

Vijay then in the afternoon at 16.06 texts me and says:

"Hi Sir, Vijay here, any comments on that Draunidalo comment in Parliament? Will any action be taken?"

I responded and said, "We need to hear it ourselves before making any comment."

Then he says: "Thanks, we will wait for that."

That was the end of the exchange with him.

Fijileaks: It was none other than VIJAY NARAYAN who was also instrumental in the suspension of Ratu Naiqama  from Parliament of Fiji; Narayan is yet to respond to Fijileaks:

Good work Vijay. I salute you. Today you have helped Fijian taxpayers get rid of the parliament of extra burden as the right place for tupou draunidalo is a mental hospital as no one in their mind would ever imagine something that was never said nor implied. tupou has lost her mind and taxpayers should be funding her treatment at mental hospital rather than feeding her big mouth stirring trouble with her crazy imiganation. We need more people like you who help dumping the tatti at the right place rather than licking it clean. Wananavuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu Vijay

For Aiyaz the " violence" of Tupou Draunidalo's use of language in Parliament is unacceptable but he was OK with the violence, terrorism, criminal intimidation and coercion of law abiding citizens during the Bainimarama military coup and the dictatorship which followed and of which he, Aiyaz, was the main boy?
I suppose Aiyaz does not see any contradiction here just as he didn't see any in him being the Secretary of the Fiji First Party and at the same time the Minister Responsible for Elections?

I am not a journalist (am a chef) but if I was (a journalist) I would have sent two texts messages –back to back- one to AG, as is, of Vijay’s and the second to Hon. Draunidalo, saying : ‘Bula, Madam, I heard you call the Education Minister a ‘Fool’ and AG an ‘idiot’, which I am sure they both are, but would you care to elaborate slightly more on it, please..’ Now, that’s the way to cook a good Kari Bargi, a complete balanced meal, no half pie.

Editor,
People in Positions of Power Enriching Themselves
FIFA lawyers say former President Sepp Blatter, his right hand man Jerome Valcke, and former finance director Markus Kattner awarded themselves hefty pay rises and bonuses over a five year period, apparently illegally ( read more in ' FIFA : Blatter, top officials enrich themselves by more than 79 million Swiss francs' DW news 4/6).
Like in a dictatorship, these top FIFA officials used their positions to enrich themselves. all the while pretending they were running an accountable democratic organisation.
It gives us a good idea why Blatter and his cronies kept making all that noise about there being no systemic corruption in FIFA. They were hiding and covering up their own tracks. And it also explains why the FIFA emperor, his right hand man and other cronies were so reluctant to relinguish their power and had eventually to be booted out.
Rogue leaders enrich themselves wherever they are - in sports, in politics, in corporations, in church ...
Any of that variety in Fiji who have enriched themselves?
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

New Order

Developments since the elections confirm that a new order is needed in Fiji. This bunch, for which a lot of people had admiration and lay their hopes in, has proved itself to be incompetent, corrupt, nepotistic, and thoroughly dictatorial. A civil order is needed in Fiji. Failing this, I see the country descending to major violence and civil strife.

AG’s statement to the Privilege Committee-“...you did not have to call him a fool,’ ...You could have come up with a smart response like, ‘Well, we are not as obtuse as you are. ‘Obtuse means thick, you could have said that, and that is acceptable.”

Does this mean that AG agrees with Hon. Draunidalo for making an adverse response given the situation but it was simply a wrong choice of word on her part?

If the answer is yes then why is the thick/obtuse Minister according to AG not taken to task before the committee?

Also “fool” is an everyday word but the word “obtuse “ is not and it would be interesting to see how the committee has given its interpretation and why the word “fool” is so demeaning that has cost Hon Draunidalo her parliament seat.

Minister Toppi.

Vainglory is another word which describes this Toppis' performance - but he was also an insulting and a mocking ' fool' as well'. He was provocative - as if just daring the Opposition to call him "a Fool". And good that the Opposition did. It was absolutely needed to call this 'spade a little more than a bloody shovel'. Minister Reddy is a FOOL alright.

A fool or an obtuse ? Is like the difference between the baigan, bringal and bargi. Khaiyum agrees on Reddy being obtuse but why not being a complete and utter FOOL.

It's shameful to read the comments of people calling Honorable Reddy as idiot and fools. None of you even cme close to his achievements academically and never will. Most of those blowing their loud mouths against him would not know this but a lot of the teachers that are responsible for your childrens education were taught by this same idiot/fool. Imagine what your children's will be if Honorable Reddy is what you all call him to be. The ever persistent effort to get rid of him proves that he has become an eyesore for assholes used to lazy/corrupt/malua fever lifestle. Get a life nut cases. Only talk when you can even achieve half of what Honorable Reddy has. Ulukau sonacicilevu.

'The March of Folly' was penned by a Pullitzer Prize winning American historian: Barbara Tuchman. A copy is in the possession of at least one former Fiji PM, suitably signed. The word 'fool' derives from folly. Less strong than 'idiot' and derived from French. Think of 'folie de grandeur' for example. Plenty of that in evidence viz the depiction of Messrs Bala and D.S. Naidu seemingly considering the next move on the board? Nothing obtuse going on there, it would appear or merely kicking up the dust to obscure the view? Vive La Bagatelle!

Editor,
Defending Right to Free Speech
In a case last week an academic at La Trobe University was suspended for expressing an opinion in a post in her Facebook.
Her lawyer reminded the university that it can't claim to be a champion of academic freedom and then suspend a staff for expressing an opinion. The university claimed the post constitutes serious misconduct.
The lawyer representing the academic - an employment law expert - pointed out the university enterprise agreement states that staff have a " right to participate in public debate about political and social issues and to express unpopular or controversial views".
The suspension was described as " unlawful" and " contrary to the principle that are at the heart of academic freedom and promotion of public debate in Australia".
Since the lawyer's intervention the university has withdrawn the suspension. She will return to work on Monday with students mounting a guard of honour for her.
I am sure there is a lesson here for both the universities in Fiji and for the Fijian State about what is the nature and meaning of academic freedom and freedom of expression in a modern democracy.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu
(Ex- La Trobe University Student).

Irrelevant? What's irrelevant? Do the universities in Fiji give their staff the " right to participate in public debates about political and social issues and to express unpopular or controversial views"?
If they do why was Professor Wadan Narsey kicked out of USP?
And why is Professor Brij Lal banned from Fiji, the land of his birth?

"The unexamined life is not worth living" - attributed to the Greek Philosopher Socrates by Plato (no less). We would surely agree with Socrates who was put to death for 'impiety' - for corrupting the youth who were enjoined to ask relevant questions. Our inability to ask such questions and to require answers has imperilled us existentially. We do see this surely?

@ Sarkar Maro.... Please read the articles by Rajend Naidu and learn from it. It's not a case of plagiarism but a classic research by a former student of La Strobe University drawing parallel situations.

Quite correct about the Supergrass journalist, Fijileaks. A cabal of journalists –from all the shades of FBC and the Fiji Sun are all in it. They don’t work in the interests of imparting impartial information to the public but to their ‘benefactor superiors’ first, who then manipulates that information to make favorable events – which are then “news” in the making. But the journalist this time got caught. He became ‘the news’ himself. The supergrass Vijay Narayan stands exposed, untrustworthy, unethical, unprofessional, sneaky little stool pigeon of the AG Aiyaz. Shame on you!

It is Khaiyum’s considered opinion that the ‘right’ word – to describe his Topper Education Minister’s blowing of his own trumpet performance, in our Parliament – should have been ‘obtuse’ and not “a fool” as used by Hon. Draunidalo. It is just the unfortunate ‘wrong’ choice of the word which has earned Hon. Draunidalo a sad suspension from the House, otherwise we are all in agreement the Topper’s performance was fairly “obtuse”.

I wonder what the International Parliament Falas would make of ‘Topper’s’ performance – Is our local Topper an ‘obtuse’ or a Fool or both?

It might be easier to have toleration for reporter Vijay Narayan were he in the past to have turned his journalistic effort and focus towards substantive criminal matters put his way such as: rape of young children, severe violence in homes of wives and female de facto partners, date rape with use of drugs, large scale trafficking of marijuana, missing samples of cocaine in police custody, pedophiles from overseas hiding away and active in various determined locations. He and other reporters like him chose not to respond - for years on end. Disgraceful professional lapses were encountered. No surprise at current conduct - just more of the same indifference to moral and public duty decay. It is regrettable when names must be called but reporters are especially required to be dutiful and responsible towards civilians in a conflict environment. 'Travel the EXTRA MILE'. He is by no means the only one found wanting. The rest know who they are.

....."will this matter be taken further?". (CFL - Vijay Narayan). A most interesting and pregnant quote. Why not have applied this to 'the matter' of a Fiji Register for Sex Offenders" with appropriate regulations to ensure compliance and appropriate Corrections Housing of sentenced persons bearing in mind the long 'tenancy' in view. Would there be conducive opportunity for providing rehabilitation, education to tertiary level and beyond, last but by no means least, regime encouragement to make efforts at compensation to all their violated victims and their families. After all, the "damaged goods" they had left in their wake ought surely to have some value to their bereft next of kin? Sharia and other legal jurisdictions at least provide clearly without obfuscation for this. Those who write on crime for the Fiji media, who fully understand the importance of full and honest court-reporting for Nation Building must take these observations and suggestions seriously. You are remunerated for your work. Since 2008 a very few of us went into court at the pleading of injured, assaulted, raped, abducted, terrorised and home-invaded civilians. Often too afraid to give evidence and confused by the melee and intimidating throng, not knowing whom to trust. So much might have been done. So little comfort was given. Pro Bono Publico - a noble and neat Latin phrase. It needs a restoration, a thorough makeover. It needs a resurrection to Public Service which is where Cicero first placed it.
