"You'll soon learn that The Fiji Land[owners] Association doesn't have to "register" in your game, there is no leverage there for us, only corruption. We'll register in the hearts and minds of people worldwide. Our leverage is in truth. Your so-called "democracy" lacks the freedoms of democracy. We are trying our case in the free world where there is true freedom of assembly (without registration), speech (without deportation), and press (without government control)." - Dave Rand, FLOA, representing almost
5,000 non-citizen owners of free-hold land in Fiji

Dave Rand, FLOA, to Aiyaz Khaiyum, 11 December 2016:
"I made a sound deal and purchased land in Fiji. If the Fiji Government wants to make a deal and purchase my land then make an offer; don't artificially tank the market with retrospective archaic and ambiguous laws meant to induce fear and confusion, then deport anyone who exposes your true plan, and charge the rest $1,000 in the eleventh hour to ask questions. No one trusts you and you cannot blame them. The Cyclone was over a year ago, the deadline is in two weeks! You'll soon learn that The Fiji Land[owners] Association doesn't have to "register" in your game, there is no leverage there for us, only corruption. We'll register in the hearts and minds of people worldwide. Our leverage is in truth. Your so-called "democracy" lacks the freedoms of democracy. We are trying our case in the free world where there is true freedom of assembly (without registration), speech (without deportation), and press (without government control). Fijivillage, this state controlled outlet you chose to finally speak up to the thousands of lives your are harming, is not a free press, sorry.

AIYAZ KHAIYUM claims "the so-called Fiji Landowners Association" is not a legally-registered entity in the country. It may or not be but recall that the Fiji Court of Appeal had ruled that Khaiyum's regime was illegal. What was his response? He got rid of the 1997 Constitution, stole FijiFirst Party name, and secretly registered it as his own to fight 2014 election. Now, he is accused of trying to steal land from small foreign investors! According to World Bank Group, FIJI is 97th if you are thinking of starting a BUSINESS, and yet he boasts FIJI is the best!

Bad Image for Fiji
13/12/2016 09:31:25 pm

This saga will prove disastrous for Fiji and its international image.

Passing any legislation retrospectively is repugnant to democracy, rule of law and good public administration. Even a village will tell you that so it beggars belief how this AG, who is suppose to be the guardian of the rule of law, could ever dream of such legislation.

But of course this AG and minister for everything would not have a clue about all this for he is a thug, suited and booted and making a mockery of Fiji and its image overseas. And he has NO SHAME whatsoever doing it with impunity. That's what he has been doing since 2006.

Thank you Mr. Dave Rand for the telling this “Minister of Everything’ in Fiji, the facts, as is, and explaining the very core of Property Law which entitles their owners to do with their properties as they please or as ones’ ‘free will’ dictates. This is the basis of free market capitalism – unencumbered by petty political meddling.

But this mad ‘Minister of Everything’ in Fiji has little respect for other peoples’ properties as He and his puppet (with the gun) have well exhibited by shamelessly STEALING another political party’s name for themselves. They are the most pitiable IP Thieves on planet earth. They’ll STEAL anything. As we say "CHOR" Sala.

This land grabbing from foreigners who have invested in Fiji will have severe consequences, not for this CHOR FFP government but those poor, grass root people who depend on tourism and foreign investment for their subsistence. Foreigners who buy land don't consume it; they build to live on it, use it collateral to raise funds to open new business in Fiji, or so on. All these activities have a ripple effect in that these foreigners purchase local labour to do various activities. Land is worthless as a factor of production when the other 2 (labour and capital) are missing from the economic equation.

A tourism-foreign investment boycott will put these people well below the poverty line and this will only reek social upheaval in addition to existing ones.

CRY PEOPLE OF FIJI, CRY. Thats the price you all pay for electing this CHOR sarkaar.

Some very worthy comments regarding this sorry saga.

As a former Fijian, my heart and soul also goes to those very poor people who will be the ultimate victims of this "tourism-investment" boycott which is now a reality.

How can I promote my beloved country Fiji in NZ, Australia and elsewhere when the government passes such draconian laws? How can I encourage academics, scientists and medical specialists to consider providing their services in Fiji in this kind of environment where their very tenure is totally unsecured - they can be removed anytime at the whim of the government without any judicial recourse?

This is a dangerous precedent. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Wake up people of Fiji before its too late.

What's happening in Fiji bears resemblance to that occuring in Syria. The only difference is that in Fiji the government is not using bombs and grenades against its people but a more potent weapon - absolute tyranny and dictatorship!1

YES DICTATORSHIP
16/12/2016 05:53:44 am

Yes, it is absolutely true that Fiji is now (if it was not much earlier) an elective dictatorship, especially with a defunct Opposition whose wings have been further chopped off by the sacking off its MPs by this dictatorship.

And what makes matters more farcical is despite this blatant dictatorship, the FFP government is trying to introduce legislation regarding freedom of information and official conduct!!! What a bloody joke!!!

Fiji may be the 97th country for choice of investment but is surely the only country in the world where the Parliament is been held at ransom by a chor FFP government to practice and promote its dictatorship and tyranny of all sorts.

Even aliens, refugees and criminals are not deported within 24 hours at the whim of the attorney general (or any official) in any civilised and democratic country, whether they have sworn to the Queen, the Governor General or the President. It is so fundamental that that a person's guilt and sentence can only be pronounced by the Courts, not the executive.

But of course, as the previous commentators eloquently put it - the AG would not give a damn to these democratic principles for he himself is a thug; a person who doesn't care about the rule of law.

What Courts?

A-S-Ks deportation order being challenged in the Court? What "Court" are you talking about?

No Court will intervene when A-S-K is involved because he is the one who selects the judiciary in Fiji so they (mostly Sri Lankan) judges are his puppets.

And look at CJ Gates. He travels with A-S-K and his cronies to the UN as part of Fiji's delegation - another FIRST in Fiji. No country in the the western world has a CJ who travels with the executive overseas to beat the trumpets of the government. Separation of powers? What a joke.

And this is the same CJ who has has presided over the Constitutional relief case about sacking of SODELPA's deputy leader and is yet to give his judgment.

The commentator of "What Courts?" makes a very important point.

No country in the world has a CJ who travels with the government to the UN to be its puppet by singing its praises, DESPITE knowing very well that there is no such thing as human rights, fundamental freedoms and true democracy in Fiji - since 2006. Gates is simply bringing the august office of the CJ in sheer disrepute and A-S-K and the government are taking good advantage of this.

And if CJ Gates has indeed heard the constitutional case of the sacked SODELPA deputy leader, then given his past and present conduct, isn't it clear which way he will rule?? His biased conduct regarding the jailing of Ratu Takiveikata which was subsequently overturned by real independent overseas judges - all of whom were overtly scathing of Gates, is a clear indication that which way his bread is buttered.

What a shame. What a sham. Another good reason for overseas investors to keep clear of Fiji!!

The poor will lose out

I wish I could put up a good opposing argument to the author of the last "Well Put" commentary. But alas I can't. How can I?

How can I when our CJ becomes the government's puppet on this UN delegation (not once but 3 times now) and the world knows about this. They are all watching. They know what the doctrine of separation of powers means in a true democracy.

So overseas investors seeing this CJ being part of the government will automatically bypass investing in Fiji for this reason alone.

Net result - once again the poor people in Fiji will suffer. Very, very sad state of affairs.
