“I also have been inspired by the present Leader of the NFP, Professor Biman Prasad for carrying on that proud tradition of the Party and for his leadership qualities shown by his tenacity in the Parliament to fight for an effective and genuine democracy which we could all be proud of and call our own. He believes in an inclusive approach to Government. He believes in listening, caring and delivering to the genuine concerns of all, including and more importantly to honour the rich culture and traditions of our indigenous people.”

MEDIA RELEASE

Robin Nair Joins NFP

Robin Nair announced today that he has joined the National Federation Party as a Member. After many decades as a professional civil servant both in the Fijian Civil Service, Australian Public Service and international organisations, Mr Nair described his first foray into the political arena as one to help build a new and better Fiji for all.

He said that he had wished to retire and pursue personal interests but he now believed that age, fatigue nor fear should be an excuse not to continue to serve your people; being true to one’s convictions.

He said, “I do not need a job but I cannot see my comfort coming ahead of the needs of our Fijian people. I hear them crying out, particularly at the grass roots level, for Change, Peace and Progress. Now is the time to make real promises of democracy, and with urgency. Fiji has defaulted, to date, on its promissory note for a democracy instead of honouring this sacred obligation. We cannot ever again subjugate our people to fear but we need to liberate them with the freedom of democracy, peace and progress.”

Nair said that he chose the National Federation Party as the best Party to lead us into the next Government because of its rich history of promoting the legitimate aspirations of all our people, always fighting for equality, social justice, democracy, and transparent and inclusive governance.  The Party seeks to build a nation which has its foundation decency and intellectual, cultural and spiritual values. It is the only Party with a genuine democratic structure and of long standing.

He added,“I also have been inspired by the present Leader of the NFP, Professor Biman Prasad for carrying on that proud tradition of the Party and for his leadership qualities shown by his tenacity in the Parliament to fight for an effective and genuine democracy which we could all be proud of and call our own. He believes in an inclusive approach to Government. He believes in listening, caring and delivering to the genuine concerns of all, including and more importantly to honour the rich culture and traditions of our indigenous people.”

When did Robin Nair come to the realisation that democracy was not being delivered to the people of Fiji by the Bainimarama regime which he had joined?

Editor,
Support The Democratic Agenda
Venezuela's opposition has urged other Latin American countries to support the " democratic agenda " in Venezuela ( Aljazeera 13/5 ). And, many countries are doing that as the autocratic bad governance of President Maduro is exposed by the day and the immense suffering, including severe food shortage faced by the Venezuelan people is revealed. Even sections of the military has reportedly withdrawn their support for President Maduro.
It seems people, including people who were previously supporters of the current government of Frank Bainimarama and Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum, are now gravitating to support the " democratic agenda " in Fiji.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

Fiji has done a great deal more than default on its Promissory Note for democracy. It has defaulted on the absolute Duty to Protect. There can be few things more disgraceful nor more memorable than having an Attorney General turn his back on eye witness evidence to a recorded act of Perjury in a Court of Law as in Sigatoka in November 2011. The turning-of-the-back was actual not metaphorical at his own Conference (or Colloquium?) at Sofitel. As in the USA, an A-G who appears to have little respect for perjured evidence and affidavits runs risks: not the least of which is a demonstrable and disgraceful lack of courtesy or common good manners. Any nation tolerating perjury with equanimity is doomed in the fullness of time. Dr Martin Luther King reminds us of the trajectory of the arc and how it turns inexorably towards Justice. Patience and Prudence are required.

"The Arc of the Moral Universe is long but it bends towards Justice" - the full quote of Dr Martin Luther King which has featured in Fiji Leaks previously. Together with late Elie Wiesel's 'Night' these are two of the most powerful demonstrations of HOPE from pure evil ever written. Is there a Moral Universe? Most assuredly 'yes' and it must always be defended notwithstanding the cost: in life, in health, in belongings, material and emotional ties because no less than our self esteem requires it.

Editor,
Joining The Opposition
Former long time Malaysian PM Dr Mahatir Mohammed (91) has virtually come out of retirement to join the opposition to unseat the current PM Najib Razak who faces serious allegations of corruption (SBS News exclusive interview with Dr Mahathir 13/5 ).
Najib had $1 billion transferred from a state development fund (1MDB) to his personal bank account and claimed it was donation he had received from Saudi royalty.
Several countries including the US, Hong Kong, Sweden, the U.K. are investigating this matter. Dr Mahathir said there is an Australian dimension in this case but the Australian government is not doing its part to delve into the matter.
But credit to Dr Mahathir at his advanced age to stand up against a corrupt PM and his cronies.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

Editor,
An Expert Explanation
In the same Dr Mahathir interview mentioned above (SBS News 13/5)
Professor James Chin offers an explanation for Australia's lack of enthusiasm to pursue an investigation into the Malaysian corruption involving the Malaysian PM.
( Professor James Chin is the inaugural Director of the Asia Institute, University of Tasmania. He is an expert on the governance issues in Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. He also works on island states in the South Pacific. His views are regularly sought by major news agencies, including The New York Times, the Financial Times, BBC World TV, CNBC and Bloomberg - university of Tasmania , Profiles)
Professor Chin said Australia put diplomacy ahead of law enforcement where it had a long standing relationship as it has with Malaysia. In other worlds Australia has chosen to do what's politically expedient and in its own interest rather than what is right.
That's a blot on Australian international politics.
That probably explains Dr Mahathir's criticism of the Australian government.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

Victor, what you call a 'boost' is a huge liability for NFP! Nair, like other FFP cronies, are the biggest opportunities and join the ranks of John Samy, Parmesh Chand, Roht Kishore etc. Remeber Nair was not given the UAE job by Kubuaqbola and Bainimarama, so he ran to Khaiyuam who convenientlylanted him in Foriegn Affairs. In the short time Nair managed to antagonise nearly every civil servant. He is loathed as a selfserving parasite. NFP should know better than give refuge to such rogues. Rememebr he was PS when Nimita got fired ad worked with Ambassador of Everything, Khan, to perpetruate his own interest. Maybe show the long monlogue he recently wrote to all of us blaming everyone but himself for his demise. NFP is playng with its own credibility. I was favourably disposed to NFP due to their stance recently but am now ashamed to be part of a club with the like of Nair.

Nancy who was born in Wellington in 1912 and grew up in Sydney run away from home at age 16. She went to Europe where She was so reviled by Everything about the Nazis she saw, she decided to join the Resistance to help fight Nazi tyranny. She became the Nazis most wanted known as " The White Mouse ". She went on to work as British Special Executive agent and become Australia's most decorated WW11 heroine.
A most inspirational story of a fearless woman who was prepared to do whatever she could to end Nazi reign.

The perjured evidence given in the Sigatoka Court and recorded as such by the Senior Resident Nadi Magistrate in his judgement was related to Serious Organised Crime. It was witnessed by six interested parties (including concerned i-Taukei elders) whose lives were being rendered hellish and young children were reportedly being abused. The Magistrate gave an Order that Sigatoka Police were to immediately investigate. They did not despite follow up visits to the Court and relevant Police Station, DPP, A-G's Office and PM's Office. Later, it was revealed by Canadian Police visiting Fiji that a convicted paedophile had been in residence in the locale and was to be extradited to Toronto. So, the efforts in attending court, chasing Fiji Police about implementing an Order of the Court, had resulted in frustration locally. The media are absolutely required to be fearless and duty-bound to their role of investigative reporting when failures of this nature ensue. They MUST attend courts and be professionally trained as Court Reporters. The AFP finally in May 2013 conducted a three day seminar at The Fijian Hotel Cuvu with FBI and U.S. Dept of Homeland Security from Washington DC and Singapore and more resilient/focused Regional Police like PNG/Samoa/Tonga/Cook Is attending. What a relief to speak to focused, well-informed CID Officers keen to confront Trafficking Risks. What possessed the Sigatoka Police to so signally fail in their Duty to Protect? Given that young Fijian girls and boys were being taken advantage of and those involved were lying in court in front of us - repeatedly? The arrogance of the Criminal Mind is breathtaking but those complicit have yet to be brought fully to account.
