MERCY COMMISSION: Meanwhile, we hope the first batch to be released will NOT be those who mutinied and seized army barracks. It was suggested on a Twitter post that Rabuka might free Lt Rupeni Vosayaco, the son-in-law of Ilisoni Ligairi, the founder of Rabuka's Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit. GEORGE SPEIGHT had pleaded guilty after he was promised that the Prerogative of Mercy Commission would immediately approach the President and get the DEATH sentence commuted to LIFE IMPRISONMENT

National Federation Party Leader, Professor Biman Prasad says their position is not about the release of any individual prisoner but they want the Mercy Commission to be appointed which should look at which prisoners are eligible for release.

Prasad says it is not for anyone in parliament to say who should be considered to be released from jail.

When asked on what is NFP’s stand based on Opposition Leader, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu calling for the release of prisoners like 2000 coup leader, George Speight and Naitasiri High Chief, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, Prasad says he does not share the same view as SODELPA, as it is the job of the Mercy Commission to look at individual prisoners.
