Dead in cell

A CONVICTED inmate who died in his prison cell on Sunday will be buried today at the Nasinu Cemetry.

The deceased Viliame Tawake, 38, was sentenced to nine months imprisonment by Magistrate Chaitanya Lakshman on January 18 this year.

Tawake's wife, Makarita Maria, told this newspaper what saddened her most was that those responsible for her husband's welfare at the Suva Corrections Centre did not try to contact her when her husband was ill.

Ana Tukana at their home in Raiwasa.

"Sa rui rarawa valevu na yaloqu ni sega ni dua me bau qiriti au mai, ni ratou tukuna ni a kau i valenibula o koya," Ms Maria said (I am so disappointed that the prison officers did not try and contact me because they said they took him to the hospital).

Ms Maria said she was only notified of her husband's death on Monday morning by three officers who visited her home in Raiwasa to convey the news. She said the officers told her her husband was taken to hospital on Friday and Saturday but was only given ORS and that he could have died of dengue fever. Ms Maria said her two daughters had visited her husband on a Saturday two weeks ago and he appeared fine. She said their two daughters were looking forward to visiting him again this Saturday. "I've told our daughters their dad has passed away, it hurts so much because we were planning to visit him again on Saturday and we were looking forward to seeing him." Ms Maria said family members were expected to decide on the funeral arrangements.

She said the Fiji Corrections Service had volunteered to supply Tawake's coffin and the cost of transporting his body home from the Suva mortuary. Fiji Corrections Service spokeswoman Kuini Waqasavou confirmed an inmate had died and they would not be commenting on the matter until after the post-mortem examination is conducted. Ms Maria said the post-mortem examination had already been conducted and they were expecting the result in two weeks.

Brutality & bestiality of Bainimarama's terror men:
“At the end of the day, I will stick by my men, by the police officers or anyone else that might be named in this investigation. We cannot discard them just because they’ve done their duty in looking after the security of this nation and making sure we sleep peacefully at night.”

Barbarism

The regime has not learnt from the past.
The bloodletting continues.
There is never any justification of this kind of barbarism.
This is the kind of behaviour that causes people to say enough is enough, and start an uprising.
People should never support a regime with blood on its hands.
PM and AG culpable for this bloody trend by sanctioning similar behaviour in past.

Mr. Viliame TAWAKE was killed by prison officers as confirmed by reliable sources (from prison officers & prisoners)....he was beaten to death- he died from his injuries...he did not die from dengue fever as was claimed by the Prison Authorities...Arbitrary killing continues in Fiji.

Rrright. And voters are supposed to take him at his word when several other grand promises like military officers not benefitting from the coup; that he would uphold the 1997 Constitution; that they would 'clean up corruption' etc have been subsequently relegated as a distant memory?

The 'word' of Bainimarama and Aiyaz and their worth is on par with Mugabe's Zim dollar.

I say we must kick f---king SODELPA out and all other parties who sat on their backsides and let this evil regime thrive - we must vote in radical politicians who will be prepared to bring us onto the streets to overthrow the regime - SODELA will run back into their fox hole if the lose and Tupeni Baba will be on the next plane out on another teaching job abroad. Victory to those who will be prepared to die for our cause. No more political masi polos including those in SODELPA

Thanks, Foxy! We will present ourselves as alternative radicals who will be prepared to confront the regime if it cheats us - its not Fijian v Indo-Fijians - its between good and evil - we are a mix bunch who are willing to pay the ultimate price - Sodelpa, FLP, NFP, and even PDP are useless creatures - big monkeys because Frank has let them out of his imprisoned cage until September; they will not be able to make any changes of what they are promising us!
