The Freedom of Association, Freedom of Assembly, and Freedom of Speech is key to a fair and free election and restoration of democracy

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption Office has executed a search warrant at the office of the Citizen’s Constitutional Forum in Suva.

It is believed the search was made after CCF held a public conversation at USP on a research document on “Discussion Paper on Free and Fair Elections” last month.

In a statement last week, Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem asked the CCF to recall its publication as well as to take down a live feed of the same paper from the website.

CCF chief executive Reverend Akuila Yabaki says they have brought down the discussion and the video of the entire conversation event from its website upon the directive of the Supervisor.

He says CCF has displayed full compliance and disclosure with FICAC’s investigation regarding the first event of the Public Conversation Series.

Meanwhile Yabaki has also condemned the allegations made by the Supervisor that the Forum breached the Electoral Decree 2014 by publishing a research paper on international benchmarks of free and fair elections and holding a public conversation on the same paper.

Yabaki also claims that attempts to have a meeting with the Supervisor of Elections have been unsuccessful.

He says CCF has also postponed its conversation event on Separation of Powers, Bill of Rights and Transition Process until future notice.Source: FBC News

Thank you FijiLeaks for saving the day - and bringing this important elections discussion to the voters’ notice! And what a good discussion it is. Also a big ‘Thank You’ to all the panelists - for your contributions which is now available to overseas audience.

What a great CCF initiative – Well done. Richard’s FrankFirst made me laugh.

CCF raid is just a "small" reminder that Fiji has not stopped being a police state just because a "democratic" elections has been scheduled.

I have had an opportunity to listen belatedly to the whole public conversation on "Free and Fair Elections" sponsored by CCF and USP's School of Government, Development and International Affairs - thanks to FijiLeaks. And, I found it very informative, illuminating and thought provoking, even humorous at times. It also gave me some sense of why the current political environment in Fiji might not be all that conducive to the conduct of a genuinely free and fair elections. I did not find anything offensive or subversive in the public conversation. It's the sort of coversation that needs to take place if we are serious about a return to democracy. But I am not surprised that Khaiyum found it unpalatable and got his henchmen to raid CCF and put a stop to the publication and broadcast of this public engagement in the election process.
Khaiyum has over the last 8 years as the mainboy in the military government given a good account of his commitment to democratic rule with the countless number of decrees he has put in place to curtail democratic rights and freedoms in the country.

why so many empty seats at the public conversation on free and fair elections? where is the public - especialy the much talked about youths? All watching the various fashion shows and circus in town? What an apolitical public if they can't turn up for a discussion on free and fair elections after the country has been under military rule for 8 years following a military coup? Shame on the Fiji public!
There shouldn't have been a single empty seat at that forum!
Talking about empty seats why couldn't even one of the 7 election commissars turn up to be part of the panel after being invited? If this issue is not of primary importance to them what is?

Yabaki should know why he has been unsuccessful in having a meeting with the Supervisor of Elections.
The Supervisor of Elections is nothing but a regime hound dog. He is there to do Khaiyum's bidding.
