PETER WAQAVONOVONO: RABUKA IS A CON-ARTIST - '[Rabuka's] Free Tertiary or Higher Education is not FREE HIGHER EDUCATION. He is actually proposing a return to his SCHOLARSHIPS, will be ethnic based"

"RABUKA IS A CON-ATRIST: The biggest Conman in the political arena today is Sitiveni Rabuka. Imagine this, he claimed that God told him to COUP the Democratic Government of Bavadra in 1987 and since than he has issued numerous statements before three different elections asking for forgiveness and admitting he was wrong. So what does that say about God?"

My views on Sitiveni Rabuka's FREE TERTIARY EDUCATION  and Bainimarama’s TELS

■ WHAT IS FREE EDUCATION

FREE education refers to education that is funded through taxation or charitable NGO's rather than tuition funding.
I repeat, Free education refers to education that is funded through taxation or charitable NGO'S  rather than tuition funding.

■ IS FREE EDUCATION A HUMAN RIGHT?

Article 13 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights ensures the right to free education at primary education and progressive introduction of it at secondary and higher education as the right to education.

So Free Education is a Right, including Free Higher Education. Our Leaders actually have no choice but to provide the means necessary to make Higher Education free or affordable

■ ARE THERE COUNTRIES THAT HAVE FREE EDUCATION?

Norway, Sweden,  Argentina, Germany, Slovenia and even Greece are part of the few nations that have free higher education

■ DOES FIJI HAVE FREE HIGHER EDUCATION?

We have partial Free higher education, but at a Certificate level and in various TECHNICAL INSTITUTES throughout Fiji. From what I understand,  these institutes offer TRADE QUALIFICATIONS.

■ WHY HAVE FREE HIGHER EDUCATION IN FIJI?

In a highly fluid and highly competitive global economy, we need the best-educated workforce to offer the world. It's actually stupid and counter-productive to the best interests of Fiji, that thousands of young people cannot afford to go to Higher Education Facilities like USP FNU or UNIFIJI  , and that thousands graduate with a pile of debt that burdens them for decades. That shortsighted path to the future must end.

I have and will continue to fight to make sure that every Fijian who studies hard in school can go to University regardless of how much money their parents make and without going deeply into debt.

■ RABUKA IS A CON-ARTIST

The biggest Conman in the political arena today is Sitiveni Rabuka. Imagine this, he claimed that God told him to COUP the Democratic Government of Bavadra in 1987 and since than he has issued numerous statements before three different elections asking for forgiveness and admitting he was wrong. So what does that say about God?

In regards to Free Tertiary or higher education, what RABUKA is proposing is not FREE HIGHER EDUCATION.  He is actually proposing a return to his SCHOLARSHIPS!

His scholarships will look like this:
- likely to be ethnic based as SODELPA wants FAB scholarships back
- will be limited in both scope and substance
- will be limited to certain fields
- will keep you in country
- does not mean that you will get a good paying job
- those who are on Loan contracts with government will have to pay it back still
- does not have a plan for the free Technical College currently on offer.
- does not solve the problem of Young people wanting to study but don't meet the LISTED areas of Study

So I don't understand why people are so excited over this plan. It actually means that he wants to take us back 30years to a scholarship scheme that is outdated and discriminatory. I'm amazed people actually buy that lie. That's not FREE HIGHER EDUCATION!!! That's a blarry Con-Job.

He apparently told one of his own youth council leaders that the SVT Government  (his Government ) created the nation's first scholarships program. This is another proof that Rabuka is a political opportunist and a liar. As a young independent nation the Alliance Government created scholarships that took over the British run scholarships program, NOT Rabuka.

■ YOUNG PEOPLE BE ALERT

I ask that you focus on the issues here.. we have a scholarship program that does not work - 600 top students a year ... and we have a pathetic loans system that places students in debt before they even graduate or have a job.

We also have an  economy that can't sustain jobs in Fiji.  This is why we need to qualify as many young people as we can and get them jobs either in Fiji or overseas. It's time we had a sport Institute that could help land contracts for promising athletes especially Rugby players,

That's what we need! A talent agency that scouts for Fiji's best musicians and performers and preps them for overseas jobs even if we can get them contracts to perform overseas that will be superb. They will send money here - we end the cash flow problems and the economy peaks - Fijians prosper .. end of story

We have the best caregivers, nurses, doctors, lawyers and accountant's - we should allow them to attain contracts overseas and aide them.

This all starts with free tertiary or higher education and debt forgiveness. I will not rest until this happens.

We must go beyond votes and look at problem solving

Be careful of buying into what politicians say. Your support and vote is what want, and they will do anything to get it. So don't fall for their lies, read their statements properly and think carefully before deciding to embrace their plans.

One thing is for sure, TELS is going away. What replaces it is the issue.

What have this Waqavonovono done for this country to try and speak against Rabuka who was the leader of the then SVT government and now leader of the SODELPA? Rabuka have done a lot for this country when he was the PM. I believe, Waqavonovono was never born that time. Do not rubbish anyone. Just speak on what you can do to help us out of this present government.

First and foremost, Waqavonovono, work on improving your English sentence structure and spelling. Very poor.

Pita Leweniqila do you have something better in you mind rather then trying to put someone like Waqavonovono down simply by saying that he procures poor spelling and sentence structure. At least there is some one out there who is willing to go to an extend of expressing their views on the current issues since we all know that the biggest liars are not those with tattoos but those with ties and if you are against this i believe you are one of those with ties around them neck choking yourself just to manipulate others into falling for your lies.

The political structure of Sodelpa is based on SDL structure reformed to suit the demand of the dictators kaiyum & Frank who do not stand a chance if Qarase was allowed to contest election. SDL were founded by the Qarase's team, the remenants of SDL were still the powebase of now the Sodelpa within and those still connected from afar.
All of us who joined Sodelpa are answerable to the Management Committee made up of reps from 51 costituencies plus others. These are representatives from the people all over Fiji. Sodelpa is truly democratic as the party is owned by the People. When Kaiyum proudly announced in Parliament referring to the Government as Bainimarama Government in fact he continues to emphasise that is Government is trully a dictatorial government and owned only by Bainimarama. Sodelpa is different it is owned by the Multi- Racial People of Fiji, we all candidates must understand that we submit ourselves to the Party and not to one. So people of Fiji NO amount of hate speech, derogatory remarks against Rabuka will hold water, he like anyone of us, and including you Waqavonovono who still worship Sodelpa, works for the party. So all your accusations are baseless, it does not affect the party nor Rabuka. Eda tautauvata kece e cecere dua dua ga na Party. So zip it bring your guys across, we have only one common enemy. Loloma levu,
Wekamu,
Isoa D Tikoca.
NB: Thank you for your huge help of the past.

How free should education be?Those countries recover their education bills via efficiently designed Tax regimes and their GDP can sustain such a system.
Lets not fool ourselves Free Education is never really Free,Govt either recover through Taxes or other avenues so that students are not in debt before finding work.

This Peter is a trick isn't he..!! I am not particularly fussed with those that jump ship because they tend to do another trick beautifully...jump the gun..!!

I have only heard of Peter through SODELPA Youth and now he is with Hope Party that is headed by under another jumper..T Drainidalo.

Peter's retort is symptomatic of disgruntled jumpers who do not get their way because of self interests. Rather than focusing on publishing sensible decision making commentaries..they resort to slandering.

Young people including Fijians and Fijians of other heritage should take note of his statement on free education. At the outset, his definitions are questionable...we all know that there is such a thing as free education (which is a service) provided by governments.

Governments provide services and do charge for some to minimize delivery costs..a good example are the hospitals and the minimal charge for dental work.

In regards to free tuition...governments can create policies that provide for tuition funding for students in various forms...eg..pay for all fees and students can repay(additional tax) when commencing work and earning above a bench marked salary ($50,000 in Australia). Or award straight out free education in the way of scholarships (all costs borne by government). There are also a plethora of free education policies available to government and at the end of the day..we tax payers elect governments to do so.

Jumper Waqavonovono's rantings is a sign of immaturity and unfit for public office. It will be only a matter of time before he jumps ship again..let's HOPE..the party crew of the same name can toss him overboard to the sharks before he acts.

Changes will happen in its right timing and will be initiated by the right group of people. Who hates the best support for education? Who rejects job creation? Who in the name of development would want to be stolen? Who would want to see changes happen without harm? Young people, study the works of our politicians. Weigh out the impacts of their agenda. The good and the bad. Fast good and more bad later OR slow good and less bad later. Fiji dont need to rush. Lets pray and support the right leaders for fiji.

Whether it be higher education, roads, bridges or other social projects they are all funded through taxation, local and foreign loans, foreign grants, etc, they are the means every government administer its socioeconomic responsibilities to achieve socioeconomic wellbeing of the populace. How the government achieve its goals is through smart administration of the above. There is no sin in providing free tuition education up to tertiary level given that it is each government's responsibility and obligation to prepare the supply side of the employment market (supply & demand equation) beyond education and training.
