Fijileaks: One obvious Indo-Fijian woman who could have been inducted onto the Committee is Dr Shaista Shameem. She did her PhD on the way men ignored the women in Indenture. Her thesis was titled: 'Sugar and Spice: Wealth Accumulation and the Labour of Indian Women in Fiji: 1879-1930'

Surely, there should be no surprise at this state of affairs? Just as we ought not to be deterred or thwarted in our efforts to demand and insist that the safety of children and women in Fiji is at all times to be of paramount importance. Denying Save The Children the full import and impact of their statement that Fiji may be deemed unsafe for children in many locations and instances will never help to fix a broken and neglected spiral over at least two decades or more. The recurrence monthly of statistics for rape, incest, abuses by close relatives and persons 'in loco parent is' reinforces our own witness and evidence on the ground in Fiji over many years of close observation. Little coherent or serious address was provided despite repeated appeals to relevant authorities at every level. One more blatant denial of shameful and callous disregard of basic rights does nothing to restore the Trust Deficit. Silence will serve no Good End and Fiji's Children and Mothers deserve better.
This long list of 'worthies' so gender unbalanced and mostly so impotent in recent past requires exposure. Time now for Gloves Off?

Dear Editor - I take exception to being labeled 'shameless chauvinists' for accepting an invite to be on an organizing committee for a conference on indenture. Guess others will feel the same. If Dr Shameem is your choice and it would help her get on the committee if I vacated my membership then I am more than happy to accede to your request.
Regards, Satish Chand.

Thank you fijileaks for highlighting that. But what to expect when the key organizer for the event is none other than sacked and former vice chancellor Ganesh Chand, who is also facing charges of abuse of office There is all the desperation from this man to get back to the fold and create a platform for himself. And who could he easily involve other than his like minded former university colleagues a lot of whom lack credible merits of their own.
It would interesting, fijileaks, to seek the views and confirm roles and participation from the list of 'organising committee'.
It is not too difficult to guess that the aftermath of the extensive academic discourse there is bound to be dishing out of political desserts. Look who all are in the list. No doubt the likes of Dr Shaista and many others do get a part in many quality and credible forums.
