MILITARY CADETSHIP in schools is already breeding a macho culture. If Akbar's idea becomes a reality, there is every likelihood that student boxers will try and settle scores outside the school boxing rings
Education Minister Rosy Akbar says it is high time the sport of boxing is introduced in schools.
While speaking during the South Pacific Boxing Promotions event in Nadi yesterday, Akbar says this is not only for the love of the sport as boxing cuts across all spheres of life such as self defence, health and confidence building.
Akbar says she hopes next year or so they will be able to launch their own sporting events in schools.
She adds that boxing is a dignified and honorable sport with its own set of rules and encouraged people not to use boxing as violence against others.
Akbar says there is a lot of scope for boxing in Fiji.

“To the men present here, remember like I said it is a competitive sport. With violence in Fiji at a very high rate, let us not use boxing as violence against our people. Let us not teach our children that boxing sort of cuts across all spheres of life. Self-defence, it has to do with health, confidence building and of course the love for the sport is here in Fiji. I hope next year or so, we will be able to launch our own sporting events in schools. I’ve seen great interest from sponsors to come on board and that is great for our future.” Minister RosyAkbar
Just look what happened on Saturday night even before she has thrown her ministerial heavyweight glove in school boxing rings:
COVID, CURFEW, AND CRIMINALS: BAINIMARAMA should go and tell RIDDHI DAMODAR that his security forces are out on patrol so that the likes of her and her family can "sleep peacefully at night"
“They went to my father’s room and started assaulting him. I woke up because I heard a commotion and that’s when I kept screaming realising what was happening. The men came after me and assaulted me as well. I was punched and kicked in my stomach and ribs. My daughter woke up when she was nabbed by the men. They were big and strong. One of them held my daughter and placed his hand over her mouth for her not to scream...It’s quite clear that the curfew hours have become a breeding ground for criminal activities.”
Businesswoman Riddhi Damodar called it the darkest 15 minutes of her life as five masked intruders allegedly held her family hostage in her home in Lami.
It was after 3am on Monday March 15 when five masked men allegedly jumped over the front gate and entered their home.
Ms Damodar’s eight-year-old daughter and her parents did not even know the men were in the house.

Ms Damodar said her daughter still has bruises and for her as a mother, it was the worst thing she had ever experienced.
She said after ransacking the house, the men took valuables items and money. Ms Damodar was surprised the men did not come in a getaway car but on foot and left in the same manner.
Ms Damodar’s father was taken to the hospital and is still recovering.
Ms Damodar’s screams woke the neighbours. Police were called and they were at the scene within minutes.
Ms Damodar said her family are still traumatised.
“All our electronic devices were stolen. I will never forget the bloody state of my father. We are thankful to the Police force for the assistance they have provided us so far,” she said.
“It’s quite clear that the curfew hours have become a breeding ground for criminal activities. We are putting our faith in our Police force and hoping they will help us get justice.”
