Fijileaks: Our sources claim Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Robin Nair was given the option to shape up or ship out after he was heard foul-mouthing Bainimarama to diplomats and refusing to work within his remit as permanent secretary; he opted to RESIGN

CIVIL servants who have resigned over the past few months have been urged to come out public and make their reasons known.

The call was made by Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa in a statement issued by her office on Friday.

Ro Teimumu said the recent string of resignations by high profile employees from the Government and its agencies was of concern.

"We have had competent locals resign and fade into the background and we have had expatriates resign, fleeing the country," Ro Teimumu said.

She claimed several high ranking government officials had been transferred without any justification.

"Those who have resigned should not fear and come out clean to inform the public what made them resign. It is your moral obligation to do that," she said.

"The Government and its agencies are public institutions funded by taxpayers of this country. They deserve to know the full truth and not half baked truth and fairytales to print an otherwise glossy picture in the name and game of reforms."

Ro Teimumu made the comments following the recent resignations of Fiji Roads Authority CEO John Hutchinson, former Fijian diplomat Robin Nair and Merchant Finance CEO Napolioni Batimala. Source: Fiji Times

Fijileaks: This is not the first time Robin Nair has fallen foul with the Bainimarama regime; in 2009 he had left in acrimony, prompting VICTOR LAL to pen the following unflattering opinion piece in Fiji Sun, 30/1/2009:

In addition, MRTD should be asking questions about Fiji's $500m unsustainable debt that the World Bank recently expressed concern about and the absence of a Nationsl Development Plan that good governance requires but which Khaiyum has failed to deliver on despite going around the countryside last year consulting views abt priorities and wants. Why hasn't SODELPA questioned Khaiyum about this?

Many have chosen to resign positions to which they were nominated and elected and for they were also unremunerated. To sit by and be obliged to witness egregious corruption or perjury perpetrated within institutions set up and funded by Public Money is intolerable. Those who care about their personal integrity and the foundation of State integrity upon which the welfare of all Fijians depends - into the future and beyond our own life tenure - of necessity should divulge their reasons in good faith. They are also obligated to assist students and staff in tertiary institutions of learning who have been exploited and abused by the greed and sexual licentiousness of certain academics and administrators. When authorities informed remain heedless, the consequences must be endured by all and sundry and graduates will find their efforts lack recognition.

Speaking Out
Professor Gallian Triggs term as president of the Austalian Human Rights Commission has come to an end. In an ABC One Plus One interview ( Sunday 25 June ) she said democracy works because of its checks and balance. Triggs provided that check on government straying from strict adherence to the rule of law, democratic norms and Han rights.
When asked what is the one thing that she is proud of in her role she said I am proud of speaking out.
We will remember her for that. Triggs did not let the mob in power bully her and she certainly did not suck up to them as a sycophant .
Public servants can draw from her inspirational example of professional commitment and personal courage to do what's right for the good of the country.

My word there is a lot to foul mouth FB about. Go for it if this is the way to get rid of tyranny and a shame of a government imposed on decent Fijians. Surely this is not a government Fijians ever deserved.

To my knowledge under no gang in power has this number of top officials come and gone prematurely. It's unprecedented. It tells you a good deal about the gang in power and their leadership style. Which of course comes as no surprise when you remember how they came to be in power ( via armed seizure of government ) and the setting up of a dictatorship . The dictatorship transitioned to democracy ( at least that is what the world community has been led to believe ) but the the twin dictators khali yum and bainimarama retained their old dictatorial habits. That's the kind of democracy Fiji has. Democracy with dictatorial rulers!

The Corrupt Parked At The Top
French investigators have charged the daughter and son in law of Congo's president Denis Sassou Nguesso with corruption - money laundering and misuse of public funds - judicial sources told AFP on Sunday ( France 24 Live 26/6 ).
Yes it's not uncommon to have that kind of enterprise - the corrupt kind - run in a family parked in power.
We are familiar with that phenomenon in post coup Fiji.

Editor,
Standing Up and Speaking Out
In his letter to The Age ( 21/6 ) PHIL Lipshut said " Well done Gillian Triggs for standing up to the government bullies on human rights".
I join Phil in applauding Triggs and every other person around the world who stands up to government bullies to defend human rights.
This letter is dedicated to all human rights defenders on this International Torture Day.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu
