TONGUE TINGLING END: As Indo-Fijians quietly celebrated NAVRATRI, the most celebrated "Nine Nights" festival in Hindu calendar, one devotee in their ancestral India cut off his tongue in sacrifice to the GODDESS!

In 1823, the American Missionary Register condescendingly argued that Hinduism was one of the "great fooleries of the world"

  • Deepak Kol, 28, passed out after cutting out tongue at Navratri holy festival
  • Mutilated himself as sacrifice to Durga, Hindu goddess of good over evil
  • His desperate family prayed and chanted hymns to bring him back to life
  • 'It is a supreme sacrifice that my son has done,' his father told London's MailOnline
An Indian father-of-two bled to death after cutting out his own tongue as a sacrifice to a Hindu goddess. Deepak Kol, 28, collapsed minutes after using a knife to chop off the vital organ during the holy festival of Navratri. But instead of taking him to the hospital, Deepak's desperate family and festival worshippers tried to 'resurrect' him by singing hymns and praying.

'We kept praying until 4am in the morning, hoping that Devi [Hindu goddess] would instil life in my son's body,' his father Sukhdeo, a farmer, told MailOnline.

'When that did not happen, I knew that the Goddess has given Deepak a place in her lotus feet.'

Deepak, from Kharhata village, northern India, had been fasting for days before he removed his tongue in tribute to Durga, the goddess of good triumphing over evil.

He fell unconscious in the village temple - but other worshippers, who had fallen into a prayer-induced trance failed to notice anything was wrong for five hours.

When they realised he was unconscious, they continued to pray and chant to resurrect him.

The head of the village told the authorities of his death the next morning - but the family refused authorities to conduct postmortem, police spokesman Riaz Sheikh said.

After his death on October 22, his father said: 'He did not die. The deity has sought him at Her service. It is a supreme sacrifice that my son has done.

Without emotion, the father added: 'He has just left his mortal body. If Devi seeks sacrifice of another son, I would be more than willing to oblige.'

This gruesome death is the latest in a disturbing number of cases in India where religious followers have died following a sacrificial offering to the gods.

Rajkumar Vishwakarma, 32, was fatally wounded when he sliced off the tip of his tongue to offer it to a deity at a temple in Satna's Chourhai village in Madya Pradesh.

He was admitted to a nearby hospital, where he died, a few hours later.

Victor , stop portraying as Hinduism is a problem, mate Hinduism is a way of living . Nowhere does it say to sacrifice your tongue to please God.Its called personal choice. Baptist churchs in Alabama and Deep South play with cobra snake as way if seeing how Jesus saves them. You Can not blame Christianity itself .finally don't quote some America missionary or any missionary regarding Hinduism because they don't any authority in Hinduism and also it's their opinion and not gods gospel. Please stick to Fiji politics which you are good at and stay away from religious cherry picked news.

Vinay

Calm down! There is nothing derogatory in the posting

It is a comparison - if anything - it just reveals Indo-Fijians are far advanced then their counterparts in Mother India, which gave us Navratri

What really struck me about the posting was the two photos of the children - whether Victor was calculating or just chose a photo at random - the vast disparity in the life styles of Indian children

There is a mother with two disheveled children of her laps and the "little pinkies" all dolled up - that explains India to me!

And now because of the idiot his children have become orphans and their mother a widow.

The quote from American missionary is more a pun and spin about the foolishness of Deepak Kol

Please Indo-Fijians Durga mata never says for us to cut out our tongues and offer her for sacrifice

Hi Ram, calm down, Vinay!

I am not so sure about Indo-Fijians being " far more advanced than their counterparts in Mother India".
Remember Indo-Fijians belong to the same ethnic and cultural stock. They came from there. Some of that variety of Indian idiot who cut off his tongue to demonstrate his religious faith are here in Fiji. The " honourable " Hindu scoundrel who threaten to behead Victor Lal belongs in this category . The Indian idiot was an uneducated and unsophisticated one; the Indo-Fijian idiot who threatened Victor Lal is an educated and sophisticated one. The former was a menace to himself, the latter is a menance to others who don't share his outlook.
Religious nuts are a dangerous lot in one way or another. And we certainly have our share of them in Fiji.

There is more delusional people in other religions that this guy. Some people in a particular religion have a delusion that they will go to haven and receive rewards in the form of virgins if they behead other people and blow themselves up in the name of god. Followers of another religion think its gods will to commit a coup and bring suffering to others. By no means god will ask anyone to do such things. Some do it as a result of the delusion created by human minds and others because of the manipulation by the priests, pastors or molbis. Whatever was the intention of the editor in putting this article up, the morale of the story is to open up our minds and realise that god doesn't want us to suffer or give suffering to others. Life is to live and let live. Become humans first and Hindus, Christians, Islamists, Buddhists etc later.

Editor,
We learn from The Economist 19/10 that " it is the most coveted literary honour but over the past month at least 40 Indian novelists, poet and playwrights have returned the prize awarded by the Sahitya Akademi, the National Academy of Letters, to protest against what they say is a surge of violent Hindu nationalism in India, imperilling freedom of speech and other secular rights and traditions. Salman Rushdie and other Western writers have spoken up in support of the protest ".
The playwrights, novelists and other intellectuals in Fiji might want to take a leaf out of the page of their Indian counterparts instead of lending their sycophantic support to anti- democratic regime in Fiji.
Read the full article ' Why India's writers are returning their literary prizes ' .
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu
