The then young lawyer Mahatma Gandhi's letter in Gujarati to his wife from inside a South African prison in 1909, urging her to stay strong despite his absence, for injustice has to be confronted, even if it means spells in prison. The original letter is in Victor Lal's possession, who is completing a book on The Rule of Law in the Making of the Mahatma - M. K. Gandhi As A Lawyer in South Africa, 1893- 1914

I enjoyed reading the letter dated 28th May. I will share this with my class. This letter will be treated as a ‘classic’, one-day, a relic like Anne Frank’s Dairy – satirical, like Dickens’, depicting the reality of our times, in the tone of…. “it was the best of times and it was the worst of times”.

It is also a good example of a ‘collective political action’ by students, by way of a petition –useful as illustration, in the sections of protest and dissent, later in the curriculum.

The letter is an excellent base idea for a fiction/non-fiction/satirical composition.

…And ours is a story of a teacher called Padayachi – in times when our country was in the hands of fakes, imposters, liars, chors, corrupt and demagogic leaders.

"Now Padayachi was a useless teacher but one who had powerful and evil friends…"

Now complete the story in 5000 words or less, paying special attention to characterization of the useless teacher and the demagogic leader, plot, conflicts, resolutions and climax.

Wonderful idea, English Teacher. Takes a good English teacher to come up with sth classic like this. Not sure where that leaves Padayachi and his friend!
