“Mr. Saneem’s appeal for insubordination against the Electoral Commission is still in the Supreme Court and he should not have been reappointed as the Supervisor of Elections. Mr.Saneem is extremely lucky compared to many others like the Secretary General to Parliament, Mrs. Namosimalua, whose contract was not renewed after acting in her positions for 3 years. Are people like Mrs. Namosimalua disadvantaged because they are not related to the Attorney General who is the Minister for Elections? Unity Fiji had highlighted many instances in the 2018 elections where the Supervisor of Elections did not do his job under the law. Some examples were: The Minister in charge of the elections was seen in the restricted counting area when counting was under way. The Minister incited violence when he said that a vote against Bainimarama was like putting a knife to the voters’ throats. The political billboards of Fiji First were erected all over Fiji well outside the legal campaign period. If the Constitutional Offices Commission had objectively put more weight on the performance of Mr. Saneem as it rightly should have done, Mr. Saneem should have been looking for another job soon after the 2014 elections.
Instead, he will becomethe longest serving Supervisor of Elections in our history.”
