Dr Grewal deserves to go. Using a fortune to build his mention inside of USP. Money USP does not have, he gets a Director UMesh to be his chamchaa.Dilawar knew of complaints against Director Commercial yet he does nothing as Umesh uses budget from Bookcentre to complete building his house @MQ52 to keep him happy. USP has fired Director Commercial Umesh with Dilawar. Umesh has a bad history in previous places he worked yet Dilawar apponts him Commercial Director...cases of sexual harrassment , amongst others. Dilawar occupies 3staff houses..yet start on most for housing are told to look outside...unfair ..power trip. Good Riddance.

When exactly did the title of USP vice-chancellor change to vice-chancellor and president?
" A society that gets rid of all its troublemakers goes downhill" - Robert A. Heinlein, Time Enough for Love.
How many " troublemakers " ( for the vice-chancellor and president) has the USP got rid of so far?
And, how far downhill has the university gone ?

USP is a regional university, How come we can't get someone who woudn't be under the authority if Baininarama?

Is it not regrettable that not a single substantive academic within the Fiji universities has seen fit to echo the words of PM Bainimarama at the commissioning of the Lomaiviti Rugby Union Clubhouse? Or even to address to our knowledge over the past ten years the ongoing trauma of domestic violence and rape (including incidents of Gang Rape) in Fiji? Yet these women and girls are often students, lecturers and maybe even appointed to your Councils? Such has been the Culture of Silence and we might thereby suggest collusion. By definition this noteworthy omission has forestalled even broaching the subject? UN Women has acted to appoint actress Anne Hathaway as Global Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women. Her special interest to date has been Child Marriage. Will this perhaps stimulate academic and intellectual interest in what the PM has just termed a national disgrace? He is right to say so. The silence is deafening from Academia. We must wonder and ask ourselves WHY?

Editor,
Universities Need to Return its Basic Roots
Dr Binoy Kampmark in Global Research, June 14,2016 write :
Universities have become bastions of managerial madness. The trend began some time ago, when money became the ultimate pursuit, and Mr Dollar became Chancelloe and Chief. The obsession with obtaining grants, the panjandrums awarding grants, the siphoning off funds, underwriting projects, have all made the academy a sad state. Since universities now obsess about having a " marketing unit ", the idea of making education a matter of commercial viability rather than educational worth has become all important.
There is another aspect to this development. Gone are the days when academic exposure was confined, left to the irate letter to the editor section or the occasionally controversial scribble. The great academics of history also doubled up as intellectuals, revolutionaries and, as A.J.P Taylor showed so well, teledons. They wore many hats in the pursuit of learning, refusing to be holed up as a scholar squirrels. Now, the scholar squirrels are everywhere, and more vulnerable.University establishments watch with eagle attentiveness to see that appropriate behaviour in the public eye is observed.
... This police state reflex suggests stupidity as much as clumsiness. The institutional brain frays and frazzled in desperation before intense debate and discussion, confusing it with unwarranted controversy. In the war of ideas, it is best not to flinch. Unfortunately, such struggles are taken to be dangerous to the dull suits running modern universities. The modern university needs to be reformed. Not least of all, a return to basic roots, the true radical sense that it be an educational, not a business institution. The corporates have the upper hand at the moment. The first step in making sure that management's hand, with its cold grip, is lessened by letting academic, at least the good lot of them, speak out. Some of their ideas will be on the daft side, but the only market place permitted should be one stocked with the currency of ideas.
How relevant is this analysis to the universities in Fiji as " bastions of managerial madness " and the " police state reflex "?
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu

This is such a sad turn of events. I do not know why Professor Rajesh Chandra has been doing these kinds of things. I supported him against the attacks by the Tongans and locals some years ago. I still want to support him. But more I see, it appears that he is in total control of the regime. My own sources say that the cause of the sacking is Grewal's alleged proximity to Professor Biman, and regime hates this. If academics cant talk to everyone freely, then this signals a most deplorable state of affairs in universities and the country. I mourn the absolute loss of academic freedom in Universities. In this context, I applaud Dr. Ganesh Chand for standing firm to his principles, even at the cost of his job; it is now increasingly getting known as FNU Council members are speaking up, albeit privately, that Dr. Ganesh rejected Minister Reddy's offer to remain as FNU VC and do as directed by the Government. Bravo for such firm stand for academic freedom. Unfortunately it seems like Prof. Rajesh is taking the path many have taken in dictatorships, of least resistance.

What's wrong with the council and ministers of education who are part of this regional university. Why doesn't anyone see the dictatorship, and control of this self-proclaimed president. If the university had progressed and gained international recognition under this Chandra, then you should be happy. In the past 9 yrs of his control 90% of good professors either quit or were fired. Many good people left in frustration. He keeps promoting his followers most of who won't get a job at any other international university. Standard has been watered down, resources pathetic, staff frustrated. Check how many have left compared to what it was before his dictatorship. Come 2018 he will glorify how much has he done for the university and want his name to be honored butit will take 20yrs to repair damage being done by him now. Don't forget the massive corruption Dilawar was trying to uncover. Alas USP is a reflection of current Fiji government and full control of USP. No one can comment on the intelligence of our one-eyed form 6 failed minister of education who has tunnel vision anyway.

this is biased reporting by fiji leaks. dilawar grewal was a nuisance in the university. he was rude to so many people and swore at anyone who challenged his flawed logic.

his home renovation showed that he abused his power and also wasted university funds.

how can a dishonest person claim that he is going to uncover corruption, if that is true by fiji leaks?

please research well before posting things on fiji leaks.

not to take any sides in this problem, but dilawar is not saint and deserved the boot. ask the many happy people in usp and you will know.
